S1 numbers?

PostPost by: Ianashdown57 » Fri Nov 04, 2011 7:54 pm

Hi,
I'm new to Elan ownership although I've lusted after one for many years! So my knowledge base is not very complete at the moment.

Can anyone tell me where else, if anywhere, I can find numbers that will help me verify the identity of my car other than the I/D plate under the hood/bonnet and the engine? The car is a 64 S1, although not a Bourne car. Is there a number visible on the chassis for example, how about somewhere else on the body?

I recall my JPS Europa had a number written in felt tip or similar on the side of the tunnel. This number agreed with the chassis number, so helped verify that this was the correct body for the chassis etc.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

I didn't get any replies on my question about Tripod joints instead of CV's but I'm going to design an installation and get at least one set made. I'll report back to the group on how it works out.

Hi,

I've been in touch with Andy and he has been very helpful indeed, but there are some questions as some of the numbers are difficult to read or do not quite agree with the records.

No? Really?

As my old Tutor said, back in Cambridge, when men were men; and women went to Oxford  , read up on your subject, go back to bed for a few weeks and then remind me what it was you wanted to know.

The folks who have worked at "Lotus" for the last twenty years, or more, have not seemed to have the slightest interest/knowledge about what went on before.

Keep us posted, what info do you already have?

From what has been previously posted here it seems that identification information has been a bit hit and miss( ); look out for numbers "scribed" on any panels or metal parts. Felt-tip, "Magic-Marker" scratched/scribed, penciled...whatever.

Hi on my Jan 64 S1, which still has original chassis the chassis has a unit number looking forward fro transmission tunnel, there is a stamped number on right hand chassis rail in front of engine mount and before the front turret. This number can be linked to unit number

Cheers
