So what does your Elan/Plus2 look like today?

The house and the car look fantastic!!! I'd like to build a house at the lake that looks like that!

The tailpipe on the Elan looks terrific! What kind of muffler / tailpipe are you using?

It's been a while since I last posted here. Back when I owned a plus 2 as well as this one.

Purchased this S2/3 Coupe as a burnt out wreck from the USA 17 years ago. Most of the body around the drivers seat including the roof was destroyed by fire leaving only the glass fibres and rusted metal, hence the conversion to convertible. Did the work over a period of 7 years and then built a couple of boats and went yacht racing.

Hoping the car will be reunited with it's motor in about two months and may be back on the road in about two years at the rate I work and the way the finances go.

Will post some more pictures as I go and you can be assured there will be heaps of questions to be asked as so much was destroyed in the fire and coming to the finishing stages.

Most of the webbing under the sills needed replacing as was rusted through.
IMG_0378.JPG and
Seats were badly rusted, welded in new sections and used rubber straps instead of springs, seats now very light and very very comfortable. changed seat anle slightly on drivers side to get a better driving position.
IMG_0377.JPG and
No boot lid, lost in transit, so purchased light weight replacement.
IMG_0375.JPG and
Bulkhead and scuttle on drivers side needed to be rebuilt as just glass shards.
IMG_0374.JPG and
Took out all the lifting headlight mechanism as rusted through. Used these headlight openings and then realised later could have used the originals with perspex covers. Oh well.

Did the 26r mods to the original chassis as outlined on this site.. Was in surprisingly good condition considering all the damage to the rest of the car.
IMG_0379.JPG and
TT rear guards where grafted on. Alloy wheels as originals badly rusted especially arount the centre to rim connection.

You can do the fibreglass work on any of my cars Terry P if you like, nice job. Are you going to paint it yourself as well?

Thanks for the compliment, but most of the work was done by 2 boat builders and helped by taking moulds from another car who also took moulds from my car. I made the panels fit and then went through a process of tidying up sills, shuts etc and also took weight back out of her where to much fill/paint/gell coat had been applied.

Probably down to the weight of an original body as repairs stack the weight on for no ones fault other than thats how it goes. The drivers side foot well is quite strong now.

Have been thinking about painting it but will probably get a boat sprayer to do it and respray with AWL Grip or something like that. It will not be 100% like using auto enamel or some such but more suitable for fibreglass use and very very hard wearing and does not fade, easy to use and does not require specialist equipment in fact can be sprayed in the local boat yard. Will probably be a slightly creamy white.

Well we went for an apple run to Wisconsin and the weather was great. More than likely the last run for the year as winter will soon set in.

Love to look at all the shots from around the world and yeas Ross has a very nice collection and an even better back ground.

Recently I swapped out the original wheel for this relic of my autocrossing days. My intention was to send the original off for restoration, but I'm enjoying the smaller wheel enough that I am having second thoughts, and might put the money toward a 26R-style wheel as sold by Tony Thompson (via RD Enterprises in the US). The original is 15" and affords a nicely framed view of the instruments. The fat-rim boy-racer wheel is 12-1/2" outer diameter, and partially blocks the combination gauge. The 26R wheel has a slightly less fat rim and is listed at 13", just about perfect.

Snowed yesterday. One last blast for the year and up on the lift for a while. Lots of little things to work on. All of them accessible from underneath.
