S2 Elan - Details Anyone?

PostPost by: trw99 » Wed Nov 17, 2010 10:00 am

I have been asked if I know anything about a S2 Elan - which I don't!. The details I have been passed are:

Registration Number: VMA 138E
Chassis Number: 3C6791
Engine Number: LP769OLBA

Does anyone on here know the car so that I can go back to the enquirer with something useful?

Thanks so much

Mine is 36/6725 and is definitely an S3

Though it now has front wheel arches flares from an S4. :P

Thank you so much for your helpful replies chaps!

Since I am stuck in London working today I have none of my usual reference material to hand. Otherwise I would have clocked the S3 number - probably!

The enquirer is a potential buyer. I have previously helped him out with a Sprint purchase and he is now looking over this Elan.

I've been doing a fair bit of stabbing, Tim!!

Since 'stopping work' I've been busier than ever....I know, everybody says that. But at last I'm getting around to actually using spanners again, mixing up resin and that sort of stuff.

My stabbing has been focused on creating a new website to define the Lotus Cortina. After helping Tim with defining the Type 26 on his website, I got the taste for doing a spot of research and structuring information to help folks determine what's what. With the purchase in April of my Mk 2 Lotus Cortina, the old passion was re-kindled, and I couldn't help myself!

I did get banned from the Lotus Cortina Register forum for daring to do such a thing (creating the website that is!!) but now have a small but perfectly formed network of Lotus Cortina enthusiasts who are helping with the definition.

Here it is....it's early days, and I've concentrated so far on context rather than detailed definition, although even the level of detail I've put up there so far has got some feathers ruffled!

My word Mark - congratulations!

A lot of information on your site, which I know from my own experience all takes time to collate, sort, order and then write up. I think you have done a splendid job.

Thanks guys, but there?s a long way to go yet! Doing this work has made me realise even more the relationship between the Elan, Elite and Lotus Cortina that, between them, define most of the road car activity in Lotus in the 60s.

There are still those Cortina owners that think that the Elan is a strange little plastic kit car, and Elan owners who think that the Cortina was just a tarted-up reps car and not a ?real? Lotus, but I do think that both polarised views are missing the point of the cars and what Lotus and Ford were creating at the time. They probably have never driven the ?other? car either, and I?m pretty certain that if they did, they would understand.

And there?s still the S3, S4 and Plus 2 websites to create yet!! I don?t think they will be done by me, at least, not for quite a while.
