Cortina Parts Cars

PostPost by: Greg Foster » Sun Nov 08, 2009 10:09 pm

I have access to a junk yard with 6 or so cortina parts cars, including a station wagon and GT. Are the differential guts, the transmission and block useable for replacement parts in an elan? None are Locorts. There is also an early Pinto with an automatic trans and original block. Any useful parts?

Hi Greg
This is a useful document for determining what block is what. As you'll see, some 'L' blocks were fitted into cooking Cortinas. Look carefully at the GT car.

The gearboxs have a lot of common components, and the diffs are identical...but probably the wrong ratio (again, check out the GT more carefully).

I don't think that the Pinto engine / box has anything useful.

Transmission on the GT could be a semi close, which is the Elan type. The third members in the diffs are the same as Elans; just a possible pinion flange change would be needed. The station wagon could have a 4:11 ratio.

Lots of goodies there actually, for the Cortina guys.

Right you are, Brian, although he didn't state what year, Mk type the GT is.

If it's a MkII GT with a 1600, could it then be the proper semi close box, ie, 2000e three rail?

Hi Greg, yes if it is a mk2 it could have the 2000E ratios but the gearchange is not the same as the Elans and without a good deal of mods to the box its not really suitable for the Elan, although the gear set could be used.
