Approx value

Hi,
Would anybody happen to know what a S3 Elan DHC that is running but needs a rebuild would be roughly worth?
The car is in the UK, and has the log book and registration number. It is complete except for the hood and frame which is missing. It has not been used on the road for a few years, but will start and drive.
I'm tempted and a rough idea of it's value would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Andy.

I reckon you are looking at ?5-6000 as a minimum for something that is basically complete and mostly working

I think that Kevin's about right...maybe up to ?7k if the bodywork / paint are pretty good, the car has all it's original bits and some history as well.

Which commands a higher price in the UK these days- an S2 or an S3?

When I bought mine back in the early 80's, the S3 was more valuable, I think basically because it was a newer car. My impression now is that with fewer S2s made they might be more in demand-

A S2 Vin plate and V5 will fetch ?2k plus, with a basket case car fetching ?7k. Their eligability for certain categories of historic racing has pushed the prices up above the S3 / S4.

There seem to be few standard S2 road cars left in the UK. Many went to the US and Japan when the ?1 was worth $1 in the 1980s, and many others were raced or converted into 26r replicas. If you have an original one, hang on to it.

Mark,

As an S2 owner that's good to hear. I didn't buy mine when it was 1-1 parity unfortunately but still a very good price- 1300 pounds, which was about $3000 at the time. Very original as well.

Since it is right-hand drive it would no doubt fetch a better price in the UK than here in the states. That said, as I have had it for 28 years I really wouldn't think of selling it anyway.

Here's a nice little S2 that Paul Matty is selling. It's a retail price, and it's a good restoration to original specification.

If your car still has the original UK registration number, and some supporting documents with the registration on, it is worth more in the UK than without. If a car was previously registered in the UK, there's no tax to pay on re-importing it. If that can't be proven, then the importer has to pay 17.5% tax on the value of the car. Add that to the shipping, handling and insurance, and even when we had $2 to ?1, it made importing an Elan from the US pretty expensive.

Glad you're hanging on to it though. I bet the early cars are only going to rise in value.

Wow, both of those cars are in really good nick- and need to be at those prices. The one at Paul Matty seems to be an exceptionally good example. I would classify mine as a good runner needing a new paint job and minor restoration.

Thanks for passing them along.
