I know the door number is not the best but the firewall dymo lable matches the door number, at least you can look at it and figure it out.

This is the bottom flat section of one of the doors that the arm rest covers of 26/4045

This body sat out in Nashua, New Hampshire for 20 or more years, you can still make out most of the numbers quite easilly, it takes a lot of sanding to remove them as the grease pencil is put on shortly after the part is molded and the gealcoat used was s

I know the body number because it is also molded in with a dymo label. I don't know the chassis number because it is a crashed Elan and Esko kept the chassis, there was no chassis plate on this Elan when Esko bought it, I got it to help Esko appease his w

I am not sure of the 3rd digit, It could be a six but I think its a zero. this door came with the body that I got from Charles Fullop who bought Don Tingle's ex D production Elan. He bought a body that was cosmeticly pretty nice and restored the Elan with

this side is almost compleatly illedgable, only the 9 can be seen clearly. If you get it into the right light (and the drugs are really really good) you can see the others as there is a luster under the grease pencil. The doors (photo above) and body are

Just been skimming over old road tests to see if Shapecarft has a mention that might throw any more light on this intrigue.

It appears to me that it was Surbiton Motors that modified the Elans and/or 26Rs. Part of that modification sometimes included the Shapecraft fastback top. Shapecraft were a body fabricator only, it would seem. Surbiton offered race and road versions of the Shapecraft Elan.

Perhaps what Ed has is a Surbiton Motors modified Elan/26R?

The car with the registration number SM 1 in the pics posted by Gary was raced by Barry Woods Team Surbiton Motors. The Oct 64 edition of Motor Racing carried a report on this car and provided information on Shapecrafts. It makes the point that SM stands for Surbiton Motors, not Stirling Moss!
