emissions test

I'm newly re-located to Vancouver and the Elan will require an idle test for hydrocarbon emissions to obtain collector licence plates and the government insurance. Could be a tall order.........It's a Weber engine with Lumenition ignition in good running order but if any one could help with some tuning suggestions: timing, plug type (currently NGK BPRY6), plug gap, mixture. I only need to pass this test once and plan a good run first to clean out a bit. Thanks all, Steve.

Would short term. screwing in of the pilot screws help??

Being in Lotus land! I am sure there are others who have had this test done on twinks, try contacting someone local and see what they had to do to pass, then put it back to original spec, there is a lot that can be done to Weber's to make your car pass.

My 1700 cc BDR with 45 mm Delorttos, passes a 300 ppm max. HC test in NJ. It doesn't really have to, but it passes every 2 years anyway.

Here is what I do:
- I go 1/4 turn closed on idle mix screws (you may need more since mine are nearly shut with this extra turn). Turn yours down until it almost wants to stop idling.
- At the same time, increase the idle adjustment to run just under 1500 RPM. This makes a big difference. On the NJ test, 1500 is the max. allowed RPM for a '69 car. Check what BC allows and set your idle just below the max.
- Give the car a good run. Be sure it is tested when everything is up to full temperature.

My +2 with a knackered twinc runing on dellortos when tuned properly on a rolling road has CO and hydrocarbon levels that would allow it to get through emissions should it have to be tested.
Luckily over here it just needs to pass the "no visible black smoke" test!

...don't forget to change the oil before test: fuel dilution (blow by) in the oil can spoil tests even with modern cars.
