Lotus Surplus Stock

PostPost by: types26/36 » Mon Jun 19, 2006 5:57 pm

Picked this up on Piston Heads, Lotus are selling off a bit of surplus stock.
Not too much T.Cam stuff but there are a few things people might be interested in i.e standard pistons @?20 each + vat (O.K if you are doing a 711 conversion) /breather elbow/tank sender/temp sender(+2) etc.

Hi,
the twin cam pistons mention small valve cutouts..
Does this mean that they are no good with big valve engines?
Cheers

Cutouts on the pistons in the sale are 42mm inlet 38mm exhaust (on the left)

My old Hepolite ones shown for comparison are 37mm inlet 23mm exhaust but cut MUCH shallower

I've fitted pistons with much smaller cut outs then the one shown in Martin's pic to BV engines with no problems but it's still advisable to check the clearence while assembling.

I emailed lotus, and there reponse was
"Gr4(Single) - A026E0712D. This part is only adaptable for Mark 1. Therefore, it is not suitable for use in a big valve twincam.)
So I guess I'll have to pay full price for pistons for my 711m conversion

Well Tim, if the one's in the sale are the ones in Martins pic (on the left)you are not going to get bigger cutouts than that or not in standard form anyway.

Those on the left *are* the pistons in the sale. I bought a set of them a few weeks ago along with a few other Elise and 90's Elan parts. I cannot see any fundamental reason why they would not work on any twincam although I'd suspect the compression ratio would drop quite a bit which might possibly be a good thing.

I only bought them on the basis that with pistons at 300-500 quid a set it would be significantly cheaper to fit liners to my block and use these standard size pistons at just 80 quid a set.

I totally agree with Martin, here is a pic of a spare set I have marked:
A026EO712C grade 3
As near as I can measure the cutouts appear to be 42 and 37mm
