I like to drive the Swiss Alps and have done it in my Exige and Elise. I had hoped to do it with a 5 speed equipped Elan but that’s now not going to happen, as the Lotus 5 speed is coming out ( I can’t live with it) and the original 4 speed back in. I’m also not sure I’d find it easy to drive from Rotterdam to Switzerland with just a 4 speed as a 70mph cruise is +4000 rpm. The down side to the other 2 cars is boot space, and there is no way my better half would do 2 weeks away with a rucksack Hence thinking about a Stag, I also had TR6’s in the day and probably one of those would work, especially with the A type overdrive (7 forward gears).
Mrs says I can’t have another without selling one…. So something to mull over in my retirement.
Cheers
Mark
If a bit more space inside and in the boot is a boon, plus a 5 speed box, why not retain the Lotus connection and look at the Jensen-Healey?
Another example of an Engine that loves blowing Head Gaskets + likes rusting away tooo
For the TR4 there was the TR4 IRS with independant suspension.

True to a point Alan, but any JH's running today will have had the old engine problem sorted many years ago.

No sprint in my garage, but if my Plus 2 was totally FUBAR'd then I'd consider trading for a Stag! Would be great to have both cars though, different cars for different moods.

I own both and I used to have a business selling modified Stag parts and my answer would still be no. The Stag is a nice cruising car but 66% of them were auto's and these have exactly the same problem as your sprint only 3 speed auto and high reving. So you would need a manual overdrive or find an auto car that has has the conversion to 4 speed auto using the ZF4HP22 which gives the same gearing as the manual. A nice Stag can be had for sensible money specially one with an RV8 engine I would suggest getting one as well as the sprint if possible.

Couldn't agree more. I have a 3.9L rv8 stag with 4OD gearbox and a long diff. Perfect cruiser.
And complementary to the elan.
