Frank, I have been researching some of these same questions. I have spoken with original S2 26R owners and my info says that the frames were originally painted black. Wipers were standard. The owners I spoke with told me that the S2 26R came with fiberglass racing seats, not the standard Elan seats.

Thank you Vaughan for all the additional nuggets of information.
I do have one question...did the Racing version of the Elan have a cold airbox in period ?
This is currently being disputed by the FIA and organiser "Peter Auto"...who both seem to overlook the drafting of their own documentation (in which anything fitted as standard can be used on a race car...it does not have to be homologated!).
On FIA Form 127, the back plate is also visible but not the cover as it was removed to show the trumpets!.
I'll hunt around for period photos!

are your referring to attempts at forced induction? I doubt many racers would opt for the stock device

then as you said, the period air box (at least the backplate) is pictured on page 2 of the FIA #127, engine left side... I don't understand how officials would go against that. Would that not be other versions of such airbox that would be under dispute?

The FIA is the ultinate rule maker, but I have no idea where this strange idea even comes from.
Personally, I see the airbox as a safely feature (to avoid leaking fuel or vapour) and would refuse o participate in an event if compelled to remove it.
In period, fibreglass cars wore a yellow or orange disc to warn marshals that fibreglass is highly inflammable...
