Popping on overrun

Good point, Ed. It's an indication that something is amiss with the carburetion is all. Either the mixture is going extremely fat or lean. Without an O2 sensor it is a guessing game and tough to tell. Your only course of action is to correct all the known symptoms that can cause the problem.
Gotta laugh because I was assured that popping was normal by an expert. One of those vendors that sells the Lotus parts and doles out advice freely. When I tried to engage him in a technical discussion about Webers lo and behold he didn't know the first damn thing. Likewise I had a similiar experience with a Weber parts vendor. I asked a question about an issue in the Weber Tuning Manual and is was obvious from their response they had never read it.

Ed
I would think that your MPG would improve if you cured it as i'm under the assumption that it is excess fuel burning in the exhaust system?

wellll-- it wont do the pop thing at full throttle and the plugs look good and brown --thing goes faster than sh*t off a shovel--pulls stronger than 4 barrels of pig sh*t -- although I'm sure the 4 into 2 into one leaks a bit with the little tractor muffler is the cause of of the pooping on overrun -so the less time in the garage is the more time on the road --I'm happy --but with the onset of winter I may give look at the exhaust leaks -- ed

Hey Ed,
Quite proud of the fact our BRM in the Lotus 41 does not pop or backfire on overruns either. It has Tecalemit-Jackson mechanical fuel injection though rather then Webers. Preventing this fault condition kinda clearly demonstrates to anyone knowledgeable at the racetrack if you really know how to tune or not.

Keith,
But isn't the pops, bangs flames, smoke and drama what the crowd want to see? who wants to go to a racetrack and see a procession of highly tuned quite, fuel efficient cars going round? I can go to the M25 (motorway around London) to see that
