The bumpers and wheels were silver the same as S3/4s (Sprints are gold bumpers with black wheels)

Here's a somewhat dated photo of 26/4221, the only obvious change from then is that I added hubcaps a few years back. The car is very original, although I am not particularly fussy about that aspect- not being a very clever mechanic myself I am not able to 'upgrade' like many owners and I won't trust any local garages around here to do that kind of work.

I have had my S2 for 21 years now. It came without hub caps. I had no idea where to get caps (pre-ebay) so I went to a few wheel places until I found one that had centre caps deep enough to cover the stub axle at the rear then with a little modification, made them fit. Not original but they look pretty good to me. It lifted the appearance of the car so much that at the next club run 3 people asked me whether I had the car resprayed.

Brian thanks for that. I am buying the paint in the next week (Jaguar Carmen Red) so will go for a 'standard' silver colour and get enough for the wheels.
I have to buy a new soft top, dont supose you can suggest the best place to get one? Or any pitfalls in doing the job. For some reason I have finished up with three toneau's but no hood?
Pete ...how much did you pay for your hub caps? ?42 seems a lot for four (with slight rust) as currently on Ebay

Bob,
You might consider those hubcaps on ebay, I bought a set of new 'replica' hub caps a couple of years back from a supplier in the UK for 76 pounds including tax. They are cheaply done- 3 are fine but 1 has peeled a bit after 2 years. Obviously not of the highest quality but will do the job until I find some that I know are better.

Hi Bob, I got my soft top from Chris Neil but it was about 15 years ago! no big deal to fit it just a bit finicky, it came with no "eyes" in it so I could fit the eyelet holes to match the fittings on the body. You must have the frames and cant rails to fit the hood and you MUST DO IT ON A HOT DAY to stretch it, I had also rebuilt the car so I could also fit the studs and fittings where I wanted in the body, I can send you pics if required.
As far as I know the rear of the hood fixes to the body by sliding into the two rear fittings but the hood needs a flat piece of metal in the hood to slide into the fittings, I had to make one up as the hood came without this metal.
The one thing I found that I do not think is correct with the hood is that it has a flap inside that goes around the centre rail and fastens with studs, (I think it is supposed to be on the rear rail) as the rear rail can become loose and the rear of the hood fall down at speed) ......just a bit unerving!
If you have a spare toneau in good condition I might be interested in buying as I do not have a toneau cover, the only problem I see could be the eyelets might be in the wrong place.

Brian
I did even realise that Chrissy Neil was still going. I bought my first 26 hood from him must be 25 years ago. Just had a quick look on his site and seems he has amagamated with someone else. Trying his search function did not work out so I will call him later.
I am away for 6 weeks soon, so will look at the toneau cover situation when I get the car back from spraying and make sure they are all S2 types and if ok give you a call.
Re the hood fitting, you refreshed my brain about having to be a hot day ... I remember ripping finger nails off trying to get the fabric tight!
Thanks again for your help ..Bob
Steve ..re hub caps, ouch! .... ?76!

My old white Elan S2 26/4250 registration EBP666C is still licensed according to the DVLA database.
I owned it from late 1965 to 1972 and I am sure that the present owner would be interested to hear about it?s early history. Unfortunately I have been unable locate him or her despite of an advert in Club Lotus News, contacting Tim Mees, a message on this net & asking the DVLA to pass on my address (they refused!!).
If anyone knows where it is now ? please ask the owner to get in contact.
Thanks, John
