Bit of Lip

PostPost by: PanoGuy » Sun Jul 31, 2011 4:01 pm

My 71 Federal Sprint does not have the lip, but it's early production, April of 1971. My 1970 production, 1971 registration S4 did not have the lip either. In the US the break is almost always with registration years, 1971 cars not having the lip and 1972 and 73 cars having the lip. Usually the later cars have the flatter steering wheel boss and better panel fit.

Flatcap wrote:Hi Tim, Some more info for your records. My current Sprint has no lip, a late one owner car & never repaired - so I know it left the factory without one, it`s a 7207 chassis number. My previous Sprint (the Colorado Orange car featured in & on the front cover of Duncan Wherretts book) also did not have a lip, that car was chassis number 71090341E. This car was also very original & had never been repaired. Regards Neil

Thanks for that Neil.

My 72 Sprint has the lip
However It was smashed up and repaired before I bought it so not sure if the rear was replaced.

So a question:- (might a silly question as I dont get involved in bodywork).

If you bought a rear replacement body section from the factory etc would they all come from a common mould or did they
differ enough that the suppliers had to keep all the original moulds for the different series.
Eg If you wanted a S1 rear end would the later Sprint one with flange be supplied and you have to trim the lip off?

Thought I would add to this old post, for documentation purposes. My January '72 Federal Sprint has the lip. Original body.
