It is very nice to drive, basically only need 4th and overdrive 4th if you want to have a relaxed drive.

Depends on the motoring i suppose
A screaming tc isn’t for me on a long haul, the +2 sort of takes the edge off. Maybe a 3:1 diff or 5speed OD etc
Intended purpose i suppose
I had an Anglia, Spitfire, 99, 765. But lusted for a Stag, never found one in Canada. Almost got a MGA, TD, TR250 and recently acquired a 1962 TR4 that will have a 2.3 or 2.5 Duratec and 5-speed. Maybe it will grow on me, I do like Stags, but, I would stick with an Elan & add some gearing

I wouldn't but as above, you get what you need from a car. Although I'm 70, I still have a yen for the dynamism and lightness of the original Elan, and, despite it's few drawbacks, and me having had lots of sportscars & sports saloons in my past, it's the car I keep going back to.
Next one will be my 7th.

Not a chance why swap a superb car for a bag of nails sorry if you own a stag but i had a TR4 before my Elan and it was the biggest heap of crap i have ever owned 1940s design being dragged through to the 70s i would never have a BMC car as a classic again ive owned a midget which was fun then a sunbeam alpine which was a pain and then the triumph both were crap to drive 5 mins in the elan wa like a different world and would only ever have a elan as a classic

I like to drive the Swiss Alps and have done it in my Exige and Elise. I had hoped to do it with a 5 speed equipped Elan but that’s now not going to happen, as the Lotus 5 speed is coming out ( I can’t live with it) and the original 4 speed back in. I’m also not sure I’d find it easy to drive from Rotterdam to Switzerland with just a 4 speed as a 70mph cruise is +4000 rpm. The down side to the other 2 cars is boot space, and there is no way my better half would do 2 weeks away with a rucksack Hence thinking about a Stag, I also had TR6’s in the day and probably one of those would work, especially with the A type overdrive (7 forward gears).
Mrs says I can’t have another without selling one…. So something to mull over in my retirement.
Cheers
Mark
If a bit more space inside and in the boot is a boon, plus a 5 speed box, why not retain the Lotus connection and look at the Jensen-Healey?

No offence taken but for the record the stag is totally different technology than the TR4. It has independent suspension all round for example and is unitary rather than a ladder chassis..

Another example of an Engine that loves blowing Head Gaskets + likes rusting away tooo
For the TR4 there was the TR4 IRS with independant suspension.

Not all TR4’s have IRS, and, maybe in a heavy steel car its not as necessary.
Butt, the styling is nice. Like a Stag.
Don’t get me going on the best quiver of vehicles please. Over 40 cars here, less than 15 by next year I hope.
Most of mine will have the Duratec.

could be a fun discussion!
Just forwarding completeness. TR4 was live axle rear. TR4A was independent, trailing arms. As an aside I think the weight of the trailing arms would have made colin chapman wince, very agricultural.
