Vaughan, your invoice date is incorrect. It should be 1st December 1965 for Unit No 5096.

It's not just a myth dreamed up by owners As far as I am aware, it is something that Graham Arnold cleared with the DVLA (Or DVLC as it may have been at that time) a long time ago and that the present DVLA staff have usually not been informed of it.
Alas I have been unable to find the proof of that interaction between DVL? and Lotus Management, I think it may have been an article in an early Lotus Club magazine.
There was a similar issue about the dark cavity of the engine bay serving as the 'required' black background of the number plate, also dealt with by Graham Arnold.
