In the spirit of positive feedback (and having just rebuilt the brakes on the front of my Elan):
I don't think those are Sprint calipers, the side entry calipers were changed to top entry for the Sprint. These are Sprint calipers:

I don't think there is a problem using side entry instead of top entry, but I think you have them on the wrong side of the car. The bleed nipple should be at the top of the caliper as any air in the caliper collects at the top. If you swap the calipers from side to side, the nipple will be at the top.

You’re right. They’ve now been exchanged
I've got a deadline, at 73, I want to finish it before I die!

They are the original sprint callipers rebuilt / restored. I, like a muppet, put them arse about face. They are now on the correct sides

That's interesting. Robinshaw/Ross have the caliper change from side to top entry as 'Sprints from 1971'. As a K reg, yours was about this time (although who knows when it went down the production line) - and with Lotus anything around a change point is open to question as they seem to have used up whatever was left until they actually made the change.
My Sprint is K reg and I recall has top entry calipers (but it has been a while since I checked and I could be wrong).
