Insuring an Elan in France

PostPost by: steve.thomas » Mon Jan 20, 2020 8:12 am

Hi Stuart
I’m in the Gironde between Bergerac and Bordeaux. I imported my Plus2 8 years ago, although the process has changed recently to be on-line. Feedback from others is that it works fine assuming you have all the required documentation. One thing to consider is how the process will work when the UK is no longer an EU country, and whether during the transition period it will continue to work as it does today. It might mean that sooner is better!
WRT insurance I use AMV Assurance who specialise in classic cars. Thankfully I can’t comment on their support in the case of a claim. I think I pay around 380 euros for agreed value insurance.
Best Regards
Steve

Hi Guy's. Interesting perspective from you all. Much the same as my experiences. I can add that for quite a while I thought the classic car insurance expensive after the UK. I eventually found a company called Mascot that is much more reasonable. I believe you can insure with them online, however, my local insurance office, BH Assurance , Ruffec, deal with them so it was easy. Also I had problems with the valuation. It was easy if your car was valued less than 15k euros. Much more problematical if above. Mascot have a limit of 30k euros before making you jump through hoops!!
If you go Carte Grise Collection to register the car be very careful of the paperwork you submit to the FFVE. Any inaccuracy with the initial submission can cause great problems. I have never had a problem, but, friends have. I have registered 4 classics and 2 moderns so far......
Good luck, Lyn.

Rregarding importing the cars, i would suggest you start any kind of burocratical procedure soon enough to be finished before 31.12.2020.
If Johnson cut's all the ties, then the customs treatment for UK will be 3r countries (like US, india, China).
There is the free import of "cars and goods" for people who take residence in a country, but who knows what stones and holes they put in your path. Burocrazy is resourceful when it comes to saying "no".
Just my 2 cents.

I would love to move to Brittany.. but I might have left it too late! The French have a great attitude to classic cars.
