Elan better than Ferrari

PostPost by: andyelan » Sat May 30, 2009 6:32 pm

Hi Again

It's the January 09 issue of Evo and the test is between an Elite, Elan, Elise (series1), 340R and 2-Eleven.

I'm sure if you loooked on the Evo website, www.evo.co.uk, you could probably still get hold of a back issue.

I totally agree, then of course I would as a fellow Elan owner.

I have had numerous very fast modern cars and none of them has been as much fun as the Elan. Faster yes, more fun no. It was chasing that fun factor that caused me to continuously upgrade and update my modern machinery until I ended up with a 911RS. Insanely quick but still the Elan is more fun and down a twisty B road actually faster than the 911. Eventually I remembered the fun I used to have with my old MGB so I started the hunt for a classic to replace the Porsche which led me to my current Elan.

"It is more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car slow"
( not that the elan is slow but in comparison to many modern cars it is.

Ever tried cornering an Isetta when it's up on 2 wheels :D :D
That is a nice quote though, could be applied to life, as Peter says!

Whilst I was (actually, I still am) rebuilding my sprint I happened accross a Mk1 mini with a 998cc engine in it.

I bought it and it is the most fun I have had in a car! The fun is at "safe" speeds, so I learnt to control the car at slower speeds than you could in a modern car. The connection I felt with the road is brilliant. I also have a more performance orientated mini (still 24 years old!) That is similar but because it has "more" interior it feels slower, until I really push it on AutoSolo's where I can be a bit of a looney.

I am looking forward to the Elan being finished as it is RWD and should be a different but related experience to the minis.

I think I am stuck in the old world of cars, new cars don't excite me... I have tried an Imprezza/ Elise / Boxster & been in a 360. They are fun but at speeds that indicate a loss of licence!

Some of the best driving fun I ever had was in a Fiat 500 (suicide door version) driving sideways round wet roundabouts while still under complete control at about 15/20 mph. As the man said, 'It's all relative.'

Believe it or not...
for me it was a VW Beetle (especially around round-abouts) that was teh most fun!

Oversteer on demand :)

Then there was that Talbot Sunbeam :D

For most of last year I was driving a Triumph Herald 1200 as my daily hack, it used to make me chuckle to see the look of drivers in modern cars that couldn't lose me down a country lane. Different story on straight roads though, still it got there not too long after them...
