You're right, but they didn't note it down in the original test, despite me mentioning it and the re-test will just be for the brakes, so fingers crossed.

Suggestions for the best replacement pump to get would be great, however, and if I can get one today/tomorrow I'll fit it.

Cheers,

George

The Otter switch is the fan switch in the top of the rad. They have a propensity to pop out and so many owners wire or tie the switch in. The sealing is clearly failing in your case and with your luck the Otter switch would pop out as you drive the car into the MOT station! :)

I thought my fuel guage was broken - I'd only been putting in a gallon at a time - thinking I was going to have to drain it, filled it up and Hey Presto! it worked! has done ever since.

...of course, I can't guarentee yours'll do the same. :?

Well, a quick update - the Elan passed the re-test (they re-did the full brake check, but that was all) and it drove there and back without missing a beat. Now have plenty of time to tinker with all the remaining niggles!

Thanks for all the help and advice so far.

Cheers,
George

For those electrical problems let me suggest Tracy Martins, "How to diagnose and repair automobile electrical systems" about $18 on www.amazon.com Most electrical books are just a description of automobile electrical systems and are mostly useless for troubleshooting. Mr Martins book tells you where to, and how to measure and what you should be seeing. I have not had a single electrical problem I could not fix after reading his book. (On my or my friends cars). I was never very good at this before. I would eventually fix it but sometimes it took me a couple WEEKS. It is one of a very small number of books that I have read more than once because it is so good. The only downside that I see is that I am becomming an electrical nerd and have two differnent types of short finders lying about.
