"marquetry" is the term for the decorative wood inlay work you're describing.

"cloisonee" is the term for decorative enamel on metal work, such as the Lotus badge.

If there is some concern about originality, I have a suggestion. Why not put the logo on the inside of the glove box lid? That way, you could display the car at shows with the lid open and spectators standing next to the car would notice it because the open lid would draw attention to it. On the other hand, if you ever enter it into a concourse show, display the car with the lid closed and you won't lose any points.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the link and the comments, I will start hunting for some suitable veneer, might be a good job to do indoors during our winter.
