Would be ok if you were buying a sandwich, I do not see any residential property though?

May be it's his place of business?

Yes, and having asked the question he hasn't "re-visited" to look at any responses...unless
as a guest, of course.

He could ask for the VIN and the date the owner bought the car and check these via:

http://www.rac.co.uk/products-services/car-data-checks/

I would also ask for a scanned copy of V5 before travelling.

I remember running a HPI check on a car for my brother; it was only a ?2,000 car but the owner had a loan secured on it for ?2,000. We told the guy he could not sell the car without clearing the finance which he did not agree with so we walked away. The guy called up a week later in a huff saying he had now cleared the loan and if we wanted the car we had to pay an extra ?200 as it had cost him this to pay the load early! No we did not buy the car. :)

I just read the entire thread and can inform you that I am the owner of this Elan. The original documents and the car itself are in my possession.

Johanna Doblhofer does not exist! The former owner was named Johann Doblhofer who imported the car from Manhattan to Austria in 1995. I bought the car from his widow whose name is NOT Johanna Doblhofer! All existing ads around Europe are frauds - I will not sell this Lotus unless I get bankrupt some day.

I'm very sorry for you, Ray and wish you good luck to get your money back at least.

John - very interesting that you should come forward. I'm sure Ray will want to speak with you to tie up the loose ends on the scam that was perpetrated upon him.

Do you have any idea how the scammers picked up the details of your car?

Hi Elanfan - I don't know how scammers work. From the former owner's widow I got photos as well as a pdf-copy of the documents before inspecting the car. Presumably she sent this documentation to other prospects too. One of them obviously used this information to deceive numerous people by adding just one single letter to the owners name and so changing his gender to female and "producing" a fictional person. I don't know about rates in the UK - in Austria a S2 in good condition costs around 30k Euros. I think in whole Europe a deal at 7000 should be examined very carefully.

Greetings, John

Reported it and got a quick reply saying they had deleted it - the link no longer works.

Please report to the advertisers any more Scam adverts - the more we keep on top of it the less people will get scammed.
