Hi Mark
Are you considering swapping your blue and white sprint ?
A work colleague of mines father treated himself to a stunning show winning Triumph Stag as a retirement present just after COVID , he thoroughly enjoys driving it and has been to the classic Le Mans in it .
He enjoys viewing my Elans and Elise but its the physical size of the Elans that he cannot live with ie , he finds them claustrophobic , even in a DHC and he's not a big fella.
I suppose its the opposite for me , at 6' 2'' I enjoy being cocooned in my FHC Elan and don't enjoy being in big classic cars.
What I'm trying to say is , do you want a big Triumph Stag to replace your blue and white Sprint ?
Knowing your car it would be a definite no!

The question is for what reason do you want a Stag?
I too like Stags and have to confess that I have looked at one or two of them at different times but never actually owned one.
A Stag would probably be a lot more practical on a day to day basis than a Sprint and require less constant fiddling as it were to keep on top form but against that it would also at times maybe be a bit mundane?
Only you can decide, but why do you have to decide to have one or the other?....Why not keep the Sprint and also buy a Stag?
Alan.

I don't think a Stag would require less fiddling, blowing Head Gaskets right and left. Plus vibrations with the UJ's + Rust/Rott.

They do rust I will grant you that...
However the head gasket problems of years gone by that gave them a bad reputation has largely been cured nowadays by special uprated head gaskets, although they do need carefully assemby and retorquing down properly. Definitely now not the problem it once was!

I remember working on a 1850 Dolly which liked blowing Head Gaskets.
For the Stag many fitted Essex V6 which i think has about the same bhp. Maybe a V8 Rover/Buick would fit.
Sprint compared to Stag sooo different.

That's not all that'll fit. A few other Yank V8s have been put in them.

In response…
I like to drive the Swiss Alps and have done it in my Exige and Elise. I had hoped to do it with a 5 speed equipped Elan but that’s now not going to happen, as the Lotus 5 speed is coming out ( I can’t live with it) and the original 4 speed back in. I’m also not sure I’d find it easy to drive from Rotterdam to Switzerland with just a 4 speed as a 70mph cruise is +4000 rpm. The down side to the other 2 cars is boot space, and there is no way my better half would do 2 weeks away with a rucksack Hence thinking about a Stag, I also had TR6’s in the day and probably one of those would work, especially with the A type overdrive (7 forward gears).
Mrs says I can’t have another without selling one…. So something to mull over in my retirement.
Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark,
Have you considered fitting a Type 9 5speed in your Sprint? I know you have struggled with the Lotus 5speed box but the Type 9 is a totally different ball game.
Before I fitted the Voigts Type9 in my +2 I too was not happy with the original 4speed gearbox high rpm at motorway speeds. I also got to a point where I seriously considered selling it because of this high revs issue but the Type9 5speed has changed all that and I really love it now. It has given the car a quieter and more relaxed feel generally. It has really transformed my +2 and no way would I sell it now.
Alan.

I have a 1978 TVR 3000S with a T9 Gearbox. Super in 5th for eating up the kms.
100 kpm at 2200 rpm. The Boots a good size + a Shelf behind the Seats.
A solid "Blackpool Rocket" with a super "sound track".

Depends on the motoring i suppose
A screaming tc isn’t for me on a long haul, the +2 takes the edge off. Maybe a 3:1 diff or 5speed OD etc
Intended purpose
I had an Anglia, Spitfire, 99, 765. But lusted for a Stag, never found one in Canada. Almost got a MGA, TD, TR250 and recently acquired a 1962 TR4 that will have a 2.3 Duratec and 5-speed. Maybe it will grow on me, or maybe I will turn it into a P/U truck or Shooting Brake. Who knows.
The Stag is nice, but, I am not keen on the drivetrain. So I would stick with a Elan, & add some gearing

Have both a +2 into which a type 9 is currently being fitted and a stag with a 3.9l rover v8. I actually sold my supercharged TR6 to by the elan. I drove the 10 countries rally in the TR6 which included a lot of alpine passes. The TR6 was great but very heavy and agricultural compared to the elan, but perhaps more reliable? The stag we have done 2 round Britain reliability runs in (i have also done it twice with a stag with the original 3l v8) and it is awesome for this. It is super comfortable and with 195bhp and 235 ftlbs it is by no mena slow. But each car is different and you get different experiences. Stag is comfort, utility and a reasonably level of refinement (mine even has heated seats). Tr6 is grunty torquey low reving fun with ok handling but a need for strong arms. Elan much more refined but higher reving..
You take your choice, I'm am lucky enough to have both stag and elan (and a spit mk IV for the kids)
