Malpassi filter king mounting position?

PostPost by: Charles73 » Tue Mar 29, 2022 9:06 am

I have a malpassi filter king to mount as I've fitted an facet electric pump.

I understand that it needs to be mounted near the carbs to be effective. I was thinking underneath the carbs? I can't see where else it can fit - apart from the manifold side, but I don't fancy that for obvious reasons!

Photos would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Underneath the carbs is also an issue as there is an ignition system under there! I can't advise where to put the regulator as I don't have an Elan but not near the distributor or the exhaust manifold is a wise move.

Best place would be where the original mechanical pump was mounted. Yes, it is next to the distributer, but so what? Why would this matter?

Fuel and spark? Fibreglass car?

Granted, if everything is in good condition why would fuel leak and cause an issue? But when fuel leaks near a sparking system? Not a good combination. With worries about modern fuel and fuel lines perishing, it is something to consider.

There have been a few people had a fire in an Elan (and other cars I can think of where the distributor is under the carb) because of this. I think the name of the game is "caution" and mitigate what you can.

No.

The name of the game is 'keeping the car in good condition'. A maintained Malpassi regulator filter will not itself leak. The danger of fire arises from poor installation and/or servicing.

Indeed. There is much more chance of fuel dripping out a carb or the airbox onto the distributor than from a regulator.
FWIW, on a related subject I can recommend replacing fuel hoses if you haven't looked at them for a while. I have had two braided fuel lines fail over the last six months with fuel spraying out between the stainless wires. The rubber pipe inside the braid had cracked and perished. I did a bit of research about fuel pipes for use with fuels with ethanol added and figured I needed 'R9' specification. There are a lot of no-name pipes around, but Codan seemed to be well respected. This link is to a supplier who carries branded hoses and Codan R9 fuel pipe in particular. Very quick service and the hoses seem of good quality. No connection:

I agree, and I see that as the same side of the coin.

I've mounted it in between the carbs and radiator, using the bolt that's above the timing chain tensioner.

All it requires is using a longer bolt and a simple bracket (I modified the bracket that was with the Malpassi).

Just be sure that the bottom of the fuel bowl doesn't foul the chain tensioner bolt below.

I mentioned it in your other post, Malpassi state do not mount on the engine the vibration may upset the operation, also note the in and out connections you may find you double back with pipe work.

Yes I have read that but I cannot find room elsewhere. Even under the carbs is extremely tight and that would make adjusting a pain.

I've seen them mounted on the carbs which isn't much different. Maybe I'll install some kind of shock absorber to counter the vibration.

I guess I'll see how it goes. Thanks

I mounted mine on the firewall on the exhaust side and ran the line to the top of the carbs across the rear of the engine parallel with the wiring loom.

You need it close to the carbs otherwise you get problems with acceleration affecting the pressure actually delivered to the carbs

cheers

My S4 has the narrow rad with the distance pieces on either side to mount it. My Malpassi is bolted to the top of the carb side distance piece (on the engine side, not at the front), so a short run of piping to the carbs. Its been there without any problems for well over 20yrs.

Mine is mounted on the front Dellorto carburetor, using a long bolt & 10mm nuts to raise it above the carbs.

I have not noticed any problem due to engine vibration.
The top securing nut is not present in this photo..

It only ever needs adjusting once so that isn't much of a problem.

Hi folks

Mine has been mounted in the boot for years with no flooding or starvation! I do use hardline from front to back and then back to goodridge up to the carbs and set it at 3psi.
