Trying to identify the model of my Elan. I have a couple of strange numbers on the chassis that don?t look like any of the numbers listed in the manuals.
Aft of the motor mount:
26A-701
Forward of the MM, on the other side:
5/6127
Anybody know what these numbers signify?

I wonder if the 5/6127 is actually 45/6127 which would make sense.

Unit No 6127 was invoiced by the factory in Sep 1966.
However, they usually took a few months to get to the US, so do you know Tony if your car is titled early on in 1967?

I'm not the original owner. I acquired the car in 1974, so my title has that date. It had 51,000+ miles on it when I bought it. The description is 1967 Lotus Elan, but I don't have the original title.

Okay Tony, thanks. Does your title give the Unit No or VIN?

I do have the original engine, but it?s not here now. As soon as I get it back here, I?ll post the numbers.
Thanks for your help.

Tmac897, in 1967 Lotus Yellow seems to be a valid colour description; by some point in 1968 the same paint-code appears to have become Lotus Safety Yellow. I found this out way back in '75/76, when I was looking to restore my, then, JPS Black/Gold lines S4 to the original yellow. Lotus; as usual, were utterly useless, as they were not interested in cars which had been paid for and gone thro' the factory gate.
Tim, trw99, is the man to listen to, in this case.

OK, I finally got back up north to my other garage to visit the body and scrounge for other parts. Here are the numbers from my car:
Chassis: 45/6127
Engine: LP16777
Unit: 6127 (as already noted)
Which would make this an S3 DHC.

Congrats Tony, on owning an Elan for about 45 years. I have had mine for about 40 years now, and you have me beaten... Just out of curiosity how many miles have you put on yours in the last 45 years?
