UK stromberg +2

PostPost by: Bombay Racing Green » Sat Jan 26, 2013 10:00 am

Hi all,

After reading the enjoyable Miles Wilkins feature in Classic Cars I noticed that in the "Elan Evolution" section it stated that all UK +2 Elans had weber heads. Now I'm aware that there is probably no such thing as a standard Elan but my 1969 +2 (50/1395) has a high compression (H) Stomberg head. I have checked the the block numbers of the engine and it would tally up to the time of manufacture of the car. My question is, were any Stromberg +2 s produced for the Home market or do you reckon it was an after market mod?

I'm just curious. Don't worry, I promise not to use it as a "unique selling point" if I ever part with it!

I'm slowly working my way through its refurbishment. Getting the drop links onto the ARB and then attaching it to the chassis yesterday was interesting!

Thanks in advance,

Pete

Hi

It has been quite well documented that a batch of +2's, around 50, were built for the states, and the order cancelled. They were subsequently converted back to RH drive and sold as kits in the UK. I think a few went to Europe as well. They had stromberg heads, safety headlights, early dash, high back seats, US reflectors on each wing and I think the later transmission cover.

My car is one of the group, serial number 2192, eoy120j. In the log book it is listed as a +2S, which is it is not, but there is no "official" model type.

I think I have one of the 50 as well, and my car has all of the attributes davidj describes.

My chassis number is 50/2399, and was registered in December 1970.

The car was supplied as a kit, and was built up by a sports car dealership in the UK for sale as a complete car.

My car originally had the remnants of the crossover pipe system, with the block casting inlet manifold type that feeds the pipes. The pipe connectors were blanked off. I have since replaced the casting with conventional inlet adapters and a low level crossover pipe. The engine has a low compression head to give about 170 psi compression. I reckon about 120 bhp with sprint cams fitted.

My car was originally orange but resprayed lotus yellow sometime in the past.

Thank you everyone for your replies. Mine certainly has the early dash but doesn't have the other items mentioned. However, It does have +2S on the UK V5 though it isn't one! This was confirmed by the Andy Graham at Lotus. He did note that it was sold as a kit to a garage in Bradford (Normand ltd).
