Chassis Number Written on the Front of the Head

The Elan was sold in component form in April '67 to an American serviceman in the UK, by Christmas '68 it was in the US sold to the PO whom had the car till April last year. I don't think the engine has been out or apart (other than to set the valve clearances). If you look closely you can see the chassis number written across the head. I always thought Lotus wrote the engine number, but it seems I was wrong.

I guess your head hasn't been painted either. I thought it was just the Elans sold in component form that had the engines thus marked, but Federal Elans were not sold as kits.
I love the poppy red cam cover.
Merry Christmas Ernie
