A little hard to tell, but it looks like a 26R front bumper and 26R flares. Kind of hard to tell from the side but it looks that way. It looks to be a factory hardtop that was modified with the side windows, perhaps windows from some other British roadster hardtop? With the roll bar, arches, etc, it must have been used in some sort of competion. How about some more pictures of the interior, rollbar, engine compartment, etc. I'm sure the many experts here can narrow it down. Where was this Elan originally from?

We have the history of the car back to 1971, according to the previous owner who bought then as an MOT failure, from a garage in kincardine on forth, it came with a "hot" engine, sold and replaced with a 1300 ford push rod. limited slip diff also sold, oil cooler missing, it still has roll bar, racing harness, oil temp and amp guages, brake servo and electric fuel pump from the usa, flared arches and wide wheels. i shall try to add more photos.the three rear windows are perspex

It's a great looking project, and lovely to see out in the open after so long.
It looks like a fast road car to me rather than an out and out track car, and maybe done on the late 60s? The steering wheel is from a late S3, or S4 / Sprint Elan, from 1967 onwards. The wheels look like standard but widened steels rather than any competition ones, and the dash is nice and standard....it would have had a large oil light and probably have lost the wood dash, and the whole interior stripped out, if built as a track car.
But that makes it a lot of fun! The body certainly looks like it has the 26R arches, and it may be worth investing in the 26R knock-on hubs and wheels, together with a 26R steering wheel, just to get it all in the right period. A bit pricey, but it will look just right and add huge value to the car.
Have a look at Tony Thompson's website...that may give you some ideas. And do come to the Club Lotus event at Donnington, where you can talk with folks who have, and have restored, 26R cars....and Tony Thompson will probably be there.

we have discovered that there is an elan series 2 chassis number 264225 first registered in dec 64 within thirty miles of us. our chassis is 264222, three numbers earlier, but was not delivered in april 65 and registered the same month.
could the delay be due to the customer changing the body and mechanical spec. i ask because our car has been inspected by a fibre glass expert (prior to repair) who cannot find any evidence of the flared wings being post factory additions

Love the condition of the car... and the roof, hope you keep it as it is...
One easy way to check if its an original S2 26R shell/chassis is to check for the raised diff cross member and also deeper inner rear guards which are visible in both boot and behind seats.
cheers

A previous owner (from 1971 to 1975) has supplied photos which show the car driven ( under its original reg mmy599c ) by r johnston in the aberdeen mc crimond sprint, top off, hood down and using a parachute as brakes. 26r type body in place.
the photos were taken from the oct 1968 edition of the scottish clubman, a monthly mag published by the scottish vintage vehicle federation. i will try to upload the photo asap .
