Another Sprint on the Block

PostPost by: MickG » Fri Apr 15, 2011 10:46 pm

Picked up my 71 Sprint today, currently in need of some TLC :D . Looks like a good genuine car and the amount of history the PO provided dates back to the first purchase in 71. Feeling pretty chuffed at the moment, found a few remedials needing attention and a little problem which may or may not be significant. A little further investigation needed.
You will probably be reading a lot more from me from now on. The amount of knowledge I have picked up from members on this site has been invaluable; Thanks :) .

Welcome to the club! I am up the M11 near Cambridge if you need to look at another Sprint to see where bits go (although to be fair, it seems no two cars were every built exactly the same).

Now I've had the chance to have a good look around and re-aquaint myself with the joys of Elan ownership. Already doing a few maintenance tasks and remedials, Engine mounts; heater control valve making its way into the footwell. Hand break, Weber mounts bolted up tight to the head, no thackery washers. Tried to bleed the brakes but was unable to undo the rear bled nipple so left that till later rebuild. Generally been having a whale of a time like a pig in s***. Sorry for the mixed metaphor.
Will post a few pictures whan I have figured out how.

Mick,

What a beautiful example. To loosen the bleeder screws, try penetrating oil and if that doesn't work, try heat. Either way, use a socket rather than a spanner to try to ease them out without breaking them. Once out, be sure to clean them up on the wire wheel and apply anti-sieze to the threads before putting them back in. Good luck.

Thanks for the comments guys. The pictures do flatter a little, plenty of work to be done.
Still can't believe I got one so quick after retiring, so hopefully plenty of time left to play and drive :D

VERY NICE! Now I have one to look at to get mine right. It is an S4 Sprint, a 'Federal' version for export to the US. It was metallic brown when I bought it and I think orange when new but I chose the Gold Leaf scheme for the restoration. Serial # 10227K. Cheers!

Hi Roy

A couple of pointers to help you get your car 'right'.

The wheels would have been black gloss with chromed rimbellishers and the sill below the door line would also have been black. Your dash would appear to be an interesting colour too!
