A recent post prompted me to try AGAIN to upload a photo. I like to think that I`m not entirely stupid but.......... I did as suggested and used Irfan, saved the re-sized photo as a file, browsed for it, opened it, submitted it. What can go wrong? AGAIN?
Now English is my first language but I`m just not familiar with the word "bmp". It seems "the extension bmp is not allowed".
In plain speaking with no abbreviations or acronyms, please tell me, where am I going wrong?

Jim, what was the name of the file?

There are various image file formats, and file usually has an extension part to the name (usually 3 characters after the .) which indicates the file format. So most photos are in JPEG format (and the filename extension is .jpg), and many other images are in GIF (.gif) or PNG (.png) formats.

The .bmp filename extension indicates that the format is the BMP file format, and obviously the site doesn't support that format. So you will have to persuade your image software to save the image in another format. JPEG (.jpg) is most appropriate for photos. Perhaps there is a "Save as ..." or "Export ..." option in the package you are using that lets you specify an alternative format.

Yes - IRFAN has an option to save as a .jpg (under File; Save As).

bmp stands for bitmap image, as Paddy says if you save your image as a conventional jpeg image before you upload them it "should" work.....

Yep, most sites can't digest a bitmap file because of its density. Take a look at the files size of the .bmp, and then again after you convert to JPeg.

As an aside, if you want to keep a picture in your computer, jpeg is not an ideal solution if you open and re-save it often. That's because it's not a lossless process - each save recompresses what is already a compressed file (some stuff is removed to save space), so some of the original information is lost on each "Save".
