burnt to a crisp

Hi all,
Thanks for the warm welcome.
Well the first Elan I found was just one mile from me. It was a +2 which wasn't what I was looking for. It was burnt to a crisp except the boot floor which still had the fire extinguisher resting nicely in its place! The thing is, is it worth buying for its parts-engine, gearbox, suspension or will I let it go for scrap.

It would appear that this is not what you want and neither would it be something that you should expand energy on. Keep looking and be prepared to take your time. You may have to invest time and money in viewing several cars before you find what you have in mind.
Let someone else have the problem of getting rid of a burnt crisp.

Depends how much the seller wants for it.
It will always be useful to have a repairable engine, gearbox and differential.
The carbs may have been ruined by fire, but would the engine be?

Depends how bad the fire was (i.e. how hot it got) and where the fire starts, from past experience yes egines can get ruined by fire (heat distortion can do lots of nasty things causing shear distortions in steel and iron) but you have to let it get pretty hot.

Oh, this all brings back very unpleasant memories of my fairly nice Lotus Cortina Mk. I that I had to helplessly watch burn to a crisp by the side of the road. The wiring harness had a short someplace and it ignited some oily under body residue. Very quickly, the whole inside was ablaze. I ducked in to grab my briefcase from the back seat and came out with my hair smoking! How could they make a car without a fuse box?!
This happened many years ago but happily, the current owner is in the process of restoring it to it's former glory.... even to the extent of the original engine which he will shortly be picking up from me.
Sorry for the Elanless subject matter but the vision of these burned cars sent me into a flashback.
