Goodby tools? (Just for a giggle)...

Hi Guys...
What tools have you loaned out and never seen again.
Here are a few I can remember......
Compressor.. Loaned it to a guy and allowed him to use my workshop. Gave him the keys!! He came back and stole my compressor and sold it for 40 quid. I found out who he sold it to and went and got it back, so I don't think this counts?? My partner and I then went to this pillocks drinking hole and asked him to come see what we had in the boot of the car. His face was a picture ( I changed it's shape a bit!!) when he saw the machine. He had denied all knowledge until then. He was later jailed for theft.
Spray guns. Had two.. Good ones!! One gravity fed other pressurized. Don't have a clue where they went.
Chain lift.. Gone! same again. God knows where!
Spring clamps.. Bye Bye...
Compression tester.....
2 leg Sykes Pickavant hyd puller... (I still have the three leg 'ring' and 1 leg..
Fluk multimeter.. (I do know who has this but tracking him down is the trick!)
Compressed air pop rivet gun...
Axle stands...
ramps...
Various torque wrenches/tools/power tools/books/ etc.... I have a nasty habit of leaving tools everywhere. Left my complete toolbox once with a client in Thurso... Pain in the ass getting it back. 5 hr drive!
I have found that after a period of time I just plain forget I have loaned tools and who too!
What's your most missed / expensive disappearing tool (s)...

my mantra is --- 'give me your watch' --the tools always come home -----the only tool I ever lost were a pair of vice grips left under the car after an alignment on the elan ---ed
dont close your eyes --you will miss the crash

Must agree, people are always so eager to borrow items but once they have them can they be bothered to return them?.......I now have a little book with a page dedicated to "loans" and if the first item doesn't get crossed off they don't get a second..

It's not just tools, although I wish I could remember who I lent my vacuum gauge set to. Lawn mowers, bicycles and recently a spate of hammers have all never been seen again. At the moment I can't take the wheels off the elan as my knock off hammer has either been lent to my father in law or left in our flat in France and I can't remember which.
Probably easier to buy another one - unless someone could lend me one for a short period while I finish off the spinner removal tool that I've been making. I'm about half way through but the mig has run out of wire and the local shop doesn't have any so borrowing a welder is next on the list.
Alex, you don't have a mig, or better still a tig, that I could borrow for a few days? I'll drop it back when I'm next up your way. How about a lathe? I've been meaning to buy one but it's hard to justify the expense for the amount I need to do on it. If I could borrow yours that would be great. You know I'll look after it and I won't need it for long. You'd be helping out a fellow Elan enthusiast and we're all friends here, right?

Just use a block of wood between the spinner nut ear and a lump hammer. That's what came with my Elan!
My policy is not to lend or borrow tools. I'd rather go do the job myself to help someone than to lend tools. The few exceptions are for cheap tools that I can easily replace.

Have had a blackboard in the Workshop for years put the name and date up saves the hours looking for a tool that you lent and have rules number one is that if they take longer than we agree to and need to use it you buy a new one and bill them.
The next time they come round they cant miss it when you point and cough.=

Good ideas Ed & Neil.... I will try that. I used to try writing things down but I just lost the info somehow. Having a crap memory does not help. I have incidently aquired a few tools along the way. I have a very nice set of circlip pliers that do not belong to me. God only knows where I got them.. Ah well!! The pal I thought I got them from said they were not his..
Stuart.. I have a spare hammer (NOT in brilliant nick!) you can have. It is the Lotus item. You want it?
PM me and I can send pic etc...

Alex, thanks for the offer! I'd written the previous post tongue firmly in cheek but to receive the offer of a real hammer! Wow
Actually the hammer really is missing but I've done a deal with my wife. Her car has just failed the MOT on a radius arm bush and I've agreed to do the work if she'll add a new suitable hammer to the list of parts we'll need (and she'll pay for!).
It's an approach that's worked well in the past. Many years ago we needed a new (expensive) exhaust on the family car and I convinced her that if we spent the money in a mig welder instead I'd use it to weld the exhaust back together again and keep it intact for next two years until we replaced the car. It worked and although the car is long gone (stolen and burnt out as it happens) I've still got the welder (no wire though!).

I agree about the memory thing, Someone (I forget who) came to talk about buying an Elan and I lent him my workshop manual, parts list and a set of Brooklands road test reprints, when I next came to work on the car, I couldn't remember who it was for the life of me (and I was a lot younger then).
If you're reading this, I'd l've replaced the manuals but I'd like the Brooklands books back please.

You need a sign in your workshop that says:
"The Man Who Loans The Tools Is Not In Today"
