..... a real 26R from a phoney. I was just reading Pete's (elansprint71) post under the Gallery section (Aintree) and it just made me curious??

Any takers on this subject? Or is it another can of worms?

cheers

Mark

It is a can of worms, Mark. An accurate replica can easily be made using TTR parts, and a replica plate made up, and in some curcumstances, the car registered. Tony Thompson has a pretty good idea of which 26rs are real and which are fake...he holds a register. But don't expect him to give you any details of those that are missing!

There's only one way to really be assured that a car is a real 26r...the provenance of the car. The original log book, race log book, period photos of the car on the track / showing the registration number, photos of restoration, invoices with the chassis number written on, old MOTs if it was a road car etc. etc. The more continuous tthe paper trail, the more likely it is the real deal. Then a trip to Tony Thompson with the chassis plate and all the documentation, and he'll verify.

For every real one (value over ?100k), there are several replcas, value considerably less.

Less a can of worms than a minefield when lots of dosh is involved.

wellll here we go -----Lotus components cannot tell you what cars went where or to whom as confirmed in my reply letter from Lotus -so that opens the door to elans that are tarted up frauds -there are some who set themselves as experts for their own financial gain --some who just accept everything they hear and read and form incorrect or mistaken opinions and pontificate at every given opportunity ----some who don't give a shit and have the cars -I doubt very few if any have seen a stock 26R as they were changed to fit individual needs and delivered with different options as ordered -- --the designation 26R refers to the drafting drawings and I assume was used by the racing group to differentiate among the race cars built and serviced there ---see the shape craft thread ----for a fine example of all of the above --and my offer still stands ------ed
