Look what else I've found !

...must stop looking. Am replacing the trunking going to the airbox as all old & crappy. Upon removal have found a grommet covering the r/front spring/damper unit bolts. Grommet is also pretty u/s - and there was what looked like a sliver of a (disintegrated) plastie item underneath it. Is this usual ? Chassis change performed about 8 yrs ago, so may have been inserted then. Note suspension seems fine, all good & solid - chassis turrets also OK - no cracks, car handles well.

I seem to recall Rohan mentioning something about this in a very old post. I should also add that there is no grommet on l/h side.

Any thoughts ?

For what it's worth, I have the same condition on my federal '70 elan. Right side, but not left. I was equally surprised to see it until I got the word that it's not all that uncommon. I've got the original frame.
