It looks like someone had a similar idea, maybe they saw the same race?

Gary- that looks like two on a theme! Here is another shot; is yours a S3/S4 like this one?

Pete.

How fast were those cars back then?
I think they called the class "Mod Sports"?
A lot of Elans were very highly modified, having F2 suspension parts brakes, tyres, engines etc.
I think it would be nice to see them competing again in GB.

Hi George
Well it is certainly not the distance, I have driven to California to buy 26/4045. The big problem is, I think its the same Elan I looked into in Michigan, I asked the owner if it was still available and I got a responce that it was. In his email back to me he said not to call as he was nearly deaf and to email for more info, I did and the responce several days later was "sold". I guess My first email should have been I want the car where do I send the money, I didn't so I still have the $1500. Needless to say the trip to Detroit in the middle of Winter is a bad memory of when I used to go back at Christmas time to see family as a kid. To give Hayes more than triple doesn't interest me, the drive although nearly double does sound more inviting though. Anyhow its closer to you...

I was loooking at the 2 1/2 Plus2's that Hayes has for sale and looked at the 64 S2 Elan and someone has bought it. Maybe they will be restoring it soon, or maybe they just bought it for the parts...

Shaken to see this photo of my car, built in the 1970's for ModSports racing. The full history of this car is as follows. I originally purchased the rolling chassis of an original lightweight Elan without engine and gearbox for a couple of hundred pounds. The car was in a poor condition having stood outside for a long time and had no engine or gearbox. It had a removable hardtop and was chassis number 26R - 13. I had the logbook to go with it. I spent a long winter working on the car and eventually made an appearance at Silverstone for my first race. Over the next couple of seasons a got to 'improve' the car and became one of the Modsports regaulars. The engine got bigger with a beautiful 2 litre Don Moore twin cam and I hankered for a better more lightweight body. Thus I parted the bodywork from the chassis and sold it to someone down in I think Folkstone, Kent. Incredible to think what the car, and original lightweight would be worht today. I think I sold it for ?1,500 !!!!! The body was then replaced with an ultra leight weigh brand new special built by a company called 'Custon Fibre' that used to have a small building opposite the Snetterton Race Track in Norfolk. Thus the body dates only from around 1975, and I still have quite a few pictures from those days. The chassis was the orginal 26R - 13 and had the old AR1 racing calipers although I did update the brakes and only recently sold the AR1 to Tony Thompson. The original spec had the doughnuts but after snapping a number of driveshafts I converted it to the sliding spine set up. If you want any more information please let me know. Peter.

Hey Pete, welcome on board! I think those are the only two shots I have of your car but I'll rummage through the files when I have some time.

Elan 26r #28 is currently for sale in the US 245,000  I bet that has cheered you up! Of course for that money it has to be a real 26r not one of the many phoneys which have been cobbled together.

More Elan photos here: www.petetaylor.org check out the Motors Gallery and the two Le Mans Classic galleries.

Cheers,
Pete.
