Fix-a-Flat

PostPost by: jmesh » Sun Mar 11, 2007 5:39 pm

Here's my second new owner question of the weekend:

My car didn't come with a spare and has panasports mounted. I do have the 4 original steel wheels in nice condition and I'm wondering if I could use one of those as a spare.

Although I'm seriously considering getting a can of fix-a-flat instead and just saving time, money and, of course, weight :) .

Any comments on how easy it is to switch between the panasports and steel wheels? How about experiences with fix-a-flat?

Thanks again. This site is an awesome resource!

I do the same thing. Usually, I carry just the fix a flat and a my Hagerty Collectors Network Protection card.

For longer trips I throw an original steel wheel w/tire in the car (why I bother, I don't know- I don't have a jack  ).

Never had a flat, so can't attest as to how well the fix a flat works.

The Hagerty Network works great though :D

Hi again Jason,
I used a steel wheel as my spare as it will fit til you can repair the tire. I did spend the extra $$ to have a panasport spare. Totally not necessary but I sold all 5 steel wheels.
Fix-a-flat may not repair all road problems. Keep a can anyway for the easy temp fix on the rainy night crossing a bridge in traffic.

This post reminded me of the old joke:

They finally released the ingredients in Viagra!
3% Vitamin E,
2% Aspirin,
2% Ibuprofen,
1% Vitamin C,
5% Spray Starch,
87% Fix-A-Flat.

Now back to the serious car stuff.

I carry a small electric air pump that will connect to the battery or the cig lighter. I found it adcvertised in a motorcycle magazine and it will pump a flat tire to 20 pounds in three minutes. I also have a spare, but if you are using tubeless tires you can uaually pump the tire up and it will hold air for a while.

I also carry a tire plugging kit so, if the tire still leaks I can stick a plug in it.

Make sure you carry a jack though.
It's usually difficult, if not impossible, to pump a tubeless up when it's on the ground.
