Insurance during a rebuild (UK)

PostPost by: stuartgb100 » Mon Oct 02, 2006 7:04 pm

Trying to help a colleague out. Not an Elan, but it might be useful to us as well.

The chap is slowly locating original bits and pieces ( or purpose-made replica parts) for his project ......... a GT40.

He's probably got a few ?1k so far, but he's soon to take delivery of the chassis and body......... so the value is about to rocket, along with his risk.

I want to advise him as to insurance, whilst the build is taking place.

Someone posted about this not long back, but I can't for the life of me find it with a Search.

Anybody help?

Regards,
Stuart.

My "advice" or comment as I am not allowed to give advice under FSA regulations (humbug!) would be:

to insure any laid up car or project in progress Comprehensively excluding road risks. Most of the classic insurers will do it usually subject to a minimum premium. Try and get an agreed value too and keep upping it as the project progresses (or car increases in value if stored over a long period).

Have my Elan on Comp laid up and if I recall correctly it's agreed at about ?12500 for about ?75 with Towergate Hall and Clarke in Middlesex thru NU. Call and ask for Angie Brown on 0208 908 5611 (this avoids their 0845 No. too!) I find her a little gem - down to earth, pleasant and helpful.

Cheers Steve

Steve, thanks.

If IRC,

Didn't you used to work with/for a well known UK insurance broker?

They offered some sort of specialist scheme?

N U rings a bell?

I remember you from the searches, but sadly not the one I was after.

Regards,
Stuart.

There's a thread "Burn all insurance companies" started in March this year. I was asking similar questions re the insurance on the car while work is underway on a restoration. It seems that an official valuation is the only sure way forwards. I've taken lots of photos and have receipts etc, other than that the garage is alarmed and securely bolted... I found that the policies I was offered appeared good on the surface, but that they did not cover the car while work was underway, or while it was in transport on a trailer. Bit of a minefield really.

wouldn't an incomplete car, i.e 'work in progress restoration' be covered by your household contents insurance?
I thought mine did, I had ?30K worth of garage cover and ?15K for the house  tools more important than chairs in my opinion!!

reminds me, i ought to sort out some insurance as it lapsed a couple of months ago
