Solid shaft Connecting Bolts

PostPost by: Deans Sprint » Tue Nov 11, 2003 8:15 pm

. I am just about to complete my Ali adapters and have more questions.
Q.1 The bolts for the 3 eared spinners are a 7/16 th UNF right? Do you use a
nut at one end or are these ONLY tapped into the adapters.
Q. 2 Is this the same for the 6 CV bolts. Are you using allen head bolts a
regular hex?
Could the usual suspects please let me know.

Hi

I tapped both sides, you can use 7/16 unf or unc, unf is slightly stronger
and slightly harder to find. I dont think there is room beside the cv for a
nut. The 8mm were tapped as well, same reason. I would try to find a high
grade bolt for all if you can. Hex or allen shouldn't matter, but check
which type of wrench will fit, its close for the 7/16 bolts

Thanks
Scott

7/16 UNF shanked bolt, could be hex or Allen cap -ali adapters must be 6082 or dural
Mine are tapped and I use Loctite as well as spring washers

Allen head high tensile with a spring washer

Arno,
I safety wired my allen headed cv bolts. Even with loctite and a
spring washer, they still came loose. An axle came totally off a few
years ago when I wasn't diligent enough to keep after tightening
them. It was a disaster.

Greg

I agree with your comments below

I also have seen the 3 bolts through the spider onto the inboard CV adapter
plate come loose on my Elan under racing conditions. So far after 10 years
not a problem on my plus 2 which gets driven a little more gently on the
road. I now check the Elan after every race but careful torquing,
lockwashers and loctite appear to have fixed the problem, I have not yet
resorted to lock wiring but maybe I should. The higher torque loading, speed
and suspension deflections under the racing loads appear to contribute more
to loosening of the bolts than the conditions experience under road
conditions.

This is why the Elan Factory / Colin Croucher CV joint kit now uses studs
(like wheel studs) pressed into the adaptor and nyloc nuts to prevent this
rather than bolts from the other side as all the other kits do.

Could you explain how you safety wire these bolts. Do they have a hole
drilled thru their heads? What part of the axle are they wired to?

The bolts are wired to each other. I have allen head bolts and
simply drilled a small hole in the head of each one. I am by no
means an expert in this but rather than wire all six together, I
wired them together in pairs. Simpler for me.
