Lotus Elan

Wiper parking position

PostPost by: "Michael Geiger" » Fri Jun 06, 2003 1:52 am

Well now that Bob Metz directed us to his wonderful "Eye of the
Storm". I noticed his wipers are parked pointing left, mine point
right. Which is the proper way (if there is)? I NEVER even thought
to consider this while reassembling my Elan. I don't think it
matters. Just wondering.

Thanx,
Mike G

Well, Mike - I just went out and looked to be sure - on my left hand
drive 1967 Elan S3 DHC coupe, USA car, as delivered new, the wipers park
to the right or passenger side. If I remember right, when you dig into
the wiper unit, the park assembly can be rotated to park the other way.

Mike,
You might have opened a can of worms here. My '72 Federal Sprint
has wipers pointing left. Had the car since '78, third owner so I
can't really tell you if this was the original position.

Mike: My 1969 S4 (Canadian version) LHD and My previous (UK Version)
1969 RHD S4 both had/have the wipers park on the left.

Hi, Mike and all -

I've wondered about that myself. My car ('70 S.4 SE) seems to
have been a Canadian model (key in the dash rather than steering
column, no crossover pipes or fitment, etc.), but it was still
manufactured LHD, and having the wipers park on the left seems
strange. Now I'm going to be looking at wipers on every car I see
for awhile!

FWIW, I looked at some old sketches and photos from the seventies,
and the wipers were the same as mine (very limited sampling).

NOW, I'm beginning to wonder about some other things about my car.
F'rinstance, which way should the speedo and tach be on a LHD car?
My speedo is on the right, tach on the left. If my wipers are
backwards, what else could be in a strange position (yes the pedals
are correct). 8^)

BTW, Mike, thanks for the nice remark about the photo. It cost me
getting a little damp and having to clean the car off afterwards, but
it was well worth it.

BTW2, Ken, if you'd like to share some pics of your BDR installation,
I've deleted a few photos from the file of my pics to make some
room. I've also deleted all the "full size" photos ? saves a lot of
room.

Best regards to all,
Bob

I never even thought to check. Of course, I don't have any wipers.

Well now that I have some input. I had the brainstorm to look at my
Authentic Lotus Elan & Elan +2 by Robinshaw & Ross. From all the
cars of which I could discern which side the steering wheel was on,
the wipers parked on that side. Lotus aparently WAS consistent on
SOMETHING. But not quite, Plus 2’s all seemed to be parked just the
opposite, parking on the non-steering wheel side! But as mine work
and are out of my vision when off I am going to leave them as they
are... okay I'm too lazy to change them.

That's a thought - service manual for my car - picture of a RHD DHC with
wipers parked on right.
Lotus +2 brochure by Lotus East -picture on front seems to show LHD car -
not 100% positive, wipers parked on left. Overhead view on back of
brochure clearly shows steering wheel on left, and wipers parked to
right.
Later brochure printed byLotus East shows +2 rhd with wipers parked on
right, on back , picture of an Elan DHC LHD with wipers parked to right.
Front, inside and rear cover of 1964 Lotus East brochure shows a1600 DHC
LHD with wipers parked to left.
A SE brochure from Herdfordshire shows a FHC, RHD with wipers parked to
right on front, and an SE DHC LHD with KO wheels just like mine with
wipers parked to right. My owner's manual - Lotus Cars LTD 1966 on page
3, shows a LHD FHC with KO wheels, wipers parked on right. Page 4 shows a
LHD DHC with KO wheels, wipers parked on right.
Page A2 of my workshop manualshows a RHD DHC - Bolt on wheels - probably
a 1600 or S1 with wheel on right, wipers parked to left.
I have a 1965 brochure with a picture of Colin on the front, and a RHD
DHC with wipers parked to right. there is a picture on the back of a RHD,
DHC top up, driver inside with wipers parked to right.
The front cover of the Bean catalog shows a DHC and FHC - not sure which
drive with wipers parked to the right.
I did not find any pictures in my 1972 workshop manual.
So, I guess they were either way- my LHD car came with wipers parked on
right just like the appropriate brochure. Well - going to leave mine the
way factory put them in - used to them that way. George 67 S3
