cv shafts

PostPost by: snowyelan » Thu Apr 03, 2003 7:53 pm

Hi All

Im 3/4 of the way through making a set of drive shafts. the joints are 90 mm
in dia and common to the deisel and base engined gas golfs and jettas from
the mid 80s to the early 90s. Im in canada but the us vws are for the most
part the same. there are a few things to watch out for when sourcing parts,
one is the shaft dia. which can vary. there are also tubular shafts which
aren't any good because of the shortness of the elan application. beware of
shafts from gti's which use a 100 mm cv joint and a slightly longer spline
on the driveshaft. you can 'upgrade' to the bigger joints, but they are
harder to find.

Hi Scott, Thanks for your input. I have found a source for GTI Shafts here
in the UK. Are the standard shafts long enough for use on a + 2.
Due to the increased track do you think these will be ok or too short. Is
the diameter larger than a base model Golf shaft. Would the longerspline
length type interfere with the 3 eared connections during driving? Are you
going to make adapter plates from Aluminium? If you have any pics I will
send you my e-mail address. Come on share all!!
Thanks Del +2 S130

Hi

The gti setup will work fine as far as I know. I was originally going to try
this setup, but parts were scarce. I am calling them gti cv's but am not
knowledgable in vw parts and there could be other sizes as well. The cv's
are 10 mm bigger (100mm o.a.)in diameter and approx 5mm thicker than the
ones I used. the adapter plates will have to be slightly bigger in dia as
well. The shafts that I have seen are the same diameter as the non gti
parts. length shouldn't be an issue, you start with four shafts and weld the
like splined ends together to make two. I used steel for the adapter plates,
which Arno had described for me. I have a drawing of the plates that I can
send, and can take pictures of the cv's, etc on monday at work with a dig
camera if you want. I have one of each of the 100 and 90mm cv's bare as well
so you will be able to see the difference. one thing I forgot to mention in
the last message was that the newer gti cv's have a raised outer edge on
them, either style should work, but I wouldn't mix them as there could be
other differences as well.

Hi all

I just wanted to give my reasoning behind going with cvs. I have absolutly
nothing against the original setup. I enjoy the challenge of getting into my
elan after my other car and having to adjust my driving style to suit, and
get a laugh when a non elan driver tries to start off for the first (or
tenth) time.
I looked at the cost of replacing the couplings as mine have seen better
days, dbe wants US 88 apiece, the parts total for used cvs and axles was Cdn
175, and being a toolmaker it gave me a project in my spare time. This is
strictly a bolt in conversion. Ill try it and if I don't like it, I'm out a
few hundred bucks and some of my time.
