junk the bonnet pulls, (hood pulls) and front spring?

I want to get rid of the front spring and bonnet pulls on my S3; the
spring gets in the way of my contemplated electric fan in front of
radiator. I saw an Elise run at Willow Springs this weekend (a very
fast car on that track). It had 2 nifty gizmos on the top of the
bonnet near the windshiled with a sliding pin that fit through
an "eye" of a pin about 1/2in dia sticking up about 1" through a
hole in the hood. There is a ring that rotates up that can be used
to pull up the bonnet (hood). These seem more appealing than zeus
fasteners, and no screwdriver is needed.

Any one know where I can get 2 of these?

I shall also be unilaterally grapefull for any AddVice.

Try searching for hood pins and automotive products on the net. There
are many types, including "key" types. I am also thinking about doing
this.

Almost any racing supplier (e.g. Pegasus Racing, Demon Tweaks, etc.)
will have latch pins similar to what you describe, though if you seek
ones with a lifting ring, your choices may be more limited.

Perhaps you should see if the Elise fittings are available. That
way, you will be fitting genuine Lotus equipment, and might avoid
having the purists burn you at the stake for making unauthorized
modifications.

Check the photo in the files section from andydijak "hood pins" (this is the
first folder in the files section). These things look really neat to a guy
whose bonnet (hood) opens at anything over 90 mph!
I have recently fitted a Kenlowe fan in place of the original steam driven
original, thereby saving several pounds and this has made loads MORE space
available around the spring lifter. Check the files section "Pete Taylor's
Elan file" Kenlowe fan fitted picture.

On my 240Z, I have pins like Pegasus sells. $17 A pin with seperate ring. I
may switch to the ones sold by Summit Racing because it is one piece. $10
APA-204110.
Summit sells a pin with seperate ring, FMS-M16700A $35. Also consider
MOR-39010 at Summit. Summit has 3 pages of "hood pin" related equipment.

Question, though- the pins would secure the back of the bonnet quite
well. What will hold the front if the spring is removed? I think we need
something to secure the front so it does not lift at high speed.

I use a strip of about 20mm thick closed cell neoprene rubber foam on the
front lip of the bonnet or hood to those in US. I removed the spring in
about 1980 and the rubber has served since without replacement. Removal of
the spring makes removal of the bonnet / hood possible every time you want
to get at the engine rather than having to hold it open with your head !

The rubber strip takes up the clearance between the bonnet / hood lip and
the body and stops any movement.

To open the bonnet / hood up without the spring it just takes a push on the
front edge to lift up the rear edge like the spring used to do.

Take a look at the lip on the bonnet that keeps the bonnet from moving
up in the front. This lip could be extended even more, and a "safety
cable" added if you are concerned about a situation where you forget to
put the new pins on correctly (Is there anyone else out there who has
taken the spring off, and forgotten to push the bonnet down (held by the
pulls) like me?).. this can lead to some interesting bull-fights with
traffic to retrieve a dented and scraped bonnet. I now always carry my
cape and suit of lights........-Gary
