S3 Door latch.

I was wondering if anyone has a simple solution to this:
My door latch is obviously worn because if I adjust it such that the
door closes nicely without hitting anything, it rattles as you go
over bumps. It seems that the wing shaped bit on the door is rattling
up and down in the bit attached to the main body. I noticed there is
a block that slides back under pressure of a spring. This spring
seems very week. Would a stiffer spring help? Is it this block that
holds it all in place? Anyone got any suggestions of how to take out
the play. I have tried putting a cable tie in the gap but this is too
big. It must be a tiny gap but enough to cause the annoying rattle.
How else should I adjust the mechanism to stop it rattling? Angle it
up/down?
Thanks.
Keith.

The lock will have some wear, but might be more an indication that
the nylon door pivots are worn or need adjustment. Also, the hinge
bolts may have worked loose.

Thanks Richard, but I recently replaced all the nylon balls and
adjusted everything during a recent rebuild. I can adjust the door
hinges and/or latch so that the door rests heavily on the latch, but
it still rattles (over more severe bumps) and bangs when closing and
it would probably wear out even more as it will be rubbing harder on
it.
Cheers.

Replace it with a "new" latch -the S3 uses the door latch from the Austin/Morris 1100 of the
early 70's. I found a few even here in SA

Keith,
I'm wondering if you don't have the latch adjusted so that the door can only reach its first latching position, but not the second. Try moving the latch plate on the door jam outward, to allow the door to reach full engagement. Any chance you have just installed new weatherstrip around the opening, and it is too fat to allow the door to fully close.

Hmmmm.. Made from unobtanium is what I heard. I know the handle is
Austin 1100, but I didn't know the rest of the latch / striker mech.

I have one spare in my "box" and I am sure I can get some more with a visit to a Mini "specialist"
Postage may just be the biggest cost

This thread illustrates what I have believed for years: there is a niche gap
in the Lotus books market for a definitive list of where all the parts came
from. Robinshaw and Ross in their book made a start, but wouldn't it be
great if someone compiled a list for the source of EVERYTHING?

There must be 100,000 spare Right and Left hand door latches begging
for a new life in a proper car just waiting to be taken off acres of Morris/
Austin 1100's in New Zealand!
I have mentioned it before..... Believe it or not they (Austin) only made
14 different sets of keys for the entire production. You have a one in 14
chance of opening not only another 1100 but also somebody elses S3
Elan. The plan is ....
if you break down in your S3 it should be by an 1100 that's a runner and
your keys fit. The trouble is that it also applies to the 1100 owner who
breaks down near your S3!

Brian,
We had MG 1100s here in the states. I remember breaking many of them 25 years ago when I was working as a mechanic, putting myself through school. This was before I had my first Elan, so I didn't know to keep the latches. Nowthey're all gone to the crusher, long ago. This was never a real popular car over here and I would be surprised if there are 1000 left in running/ non-running condition at all in the whole country.
If you want to remove some, and can get them for reasonable money, I'd takea few sets. I've got three S3's and hope I will be able to enjoy them for many years to come. I'm not concerned about keys, since I have never lockedthe doors, only the boot.

Brian,
I too would be interested in a set. This would hopefully include striker
plates and the latch mechanisms, if possible.
