S3 dash..

The 'warning light' thread reminded me that nobody answered my S3 RHD dash
question.
I have three holes on the rhs (RHD), one should have brake warning I know.
Then there are two more. One is about 10mm and the other 20mm.
Did the wiper switch used to live over here (it's currently were the cigar
lighter should be)?
If so what the little hole for? Not hazard as the early S3 loom doesn't have
one?

Simon,
Checked the "official" books- what a surprise, no help. Quote from the Ian
Ward book P81 photo caption, .... "(this S3 having crash padding on it's
lower edge) and the switch type and layout varied from model to model". My
newly acquired S4/Sprint Owner's Manual shows 3 holes for LHD models but
only 1 hole for RHD, and mine has 2 holes! One is for parking brake warning
and the other is for the heated rear window (FHC). As far as I can remember
all the S3/4 cars I have come across have had the wiper switch up in the
left middle above the ash tray level (both RHD and LHD). If your car is/was
an FHC, then maybe this accounts for one of the holes, but 20mm sounds cigar
lighter/headlight vac switch size to me.

Perhaps a cenus of all owners should be taken...
"...and lo it was discovered that 83% of Elans have their switchgear
shoved into which ever hole was nearest at the time best out of three..."
The upper left middle you mention is taken up by the heater valve
bastard-stiff pull knob.

\ \ / clock radio fuel tach speed oil /
\ \--------/ heater 1 2 3 choke 4 5 6 /

\ wiper ign. lights pop-up /

2. fan
3. interior lights
4. ??brake warning

6. ??Wiper switch??
I shall move the wiper switch as I need the cigar lighter or how else am I
to enjoy a fat Cuban on the way to work
Anybody else have dash board opinions?????
And was it true or just an urban myth that the guy making the looms at Lotus
in the early 70s was colour blind.
Simon
BTW I am currently inputting the wiring diagram into a plain text email much
in the same way I drew the above dash!

Thanks Pete,
I think I see what has happened, on my dash there is a clock on the left of
the radio whereas originally there would have been the wiper switch or the
heater valve pull.
I also suspect that the holes on the right are originally for a rear demist
switch and an indicator that this is on.
Mine is an early S3 with no demist but the, high quality and the not
original dash I'm sure, is probably styled for a later S3 SE
Pity that the steering wheel obscures the view!

Are there any good pictures of the S1 dash out there? The only ones I can
find in books or the web are fuzzy b&w.

Hi Fred,
I have a bare dash that I could photograph front and rear for a reference.
It is LHD for an S1, serial # 26/0684. I have no idea what the differences
between an S1 and S2 dash might be, but I believe what I have is the
original for the S1. If this would help, give me a couple of days to round
up a camera and get some shots ready for you.

That would be great. I was particuarly interested in the far left hand and
right sides and how the dash merges into the side. The S2 btw, is the full
wood veneer.

Hi Fred
I also have a bare S1 dash from ser no 260076
However although it is original there seems to be inconsistencies with
what it is supposed to look like, for instance it has a glove box lid
which wasnt supposed to exist until S2 so I also can take a picture of
it if your interested.
Let me know your email address to send the picture to as the list will
strip the attachment.

Fred and others,
In the Ian Ward book there is a photo captioned "Either a late S1 or an
early S2. Running changes meant that this export Elan had S1 door trim with
an S2 dash".
So if your cars were "late" S1's then maybe the dash is what it was supplied
with?
I also have a copy of a road test of the Elan 1500 from The Motor magazine
Oct 10th 1962, this must be on of the very earliest cars; the dash is not
full width, comprising the bit in front of the driver and the centre console
and then a totally separate glove box (with lid).
And.... Car and Driver Feb 64 shows a LHD car still with separate glove box,
but different from the earlier car.
I can scan and add the pictures to the files if you want.
Cheers,
Pete (a fuzzy Black and White sort of guy).
