+2 Dash / heater

PostPost by: kstrutt1 » Thu Oct 11, 2001 10:29 am

I thought I would keep you up to date,

I have pulled the dash, most of the wiring looks in good condition and
just needs a clean up, I have modified the heater to allow a modern
radio to be fitted in a similar way to Sean's and installed a Modern
Ford fan motor, the problem here is that it is a little too long and
requires me to add a deeper bulge in the bulkhead (simple glass fibre
work). The airflow is greatly improved though. All the sponge inside
the heater is falling apart and needs replacing but the case is in
very good condition.
The next step is to make a brace to go right across the car and link
the transmission tunnel, the top door hinge points and the steering
column.
The dash is being built up on the dining room table, if anyone else
has done this did you drill pilot holed for all the screws?
Finally I need to decide what to do with the bonnet release, mine went
through a hole in the dash by the tacho, the new dash does not have a
hole here and my workshop manual shows it under the dash where should
it go?

Hi Kevin,

Nice to hear your making good progress.

As a matter of fact I replaced the original heater fan motor when I did the radio mod (that was 14 years ago)
The replacement motor was longer and I too had to cut and fibreglass a small bulge in the bulkhead. The clearance is a bit tighter when taking out the engine, but not a problem. I didn't want to recommend taking a saw to the fibreglass !

I have also braced the steering column, but just on the driver side, I will do a drawing when I get time.

I've often thought a full width brace as you propose would be very desirable, I would be very interested to hear how you plan to do this.

The bonnet release in my Plus 2 is mounted in the under-dash trim just left of the steering column. However I have recently rendered it inactive by sticking a couple of split pins into the bonnet catches which keeps them open, since I fitted bonnet pins to comply with FIA specs for hillclimbs etc.
