RAD. FAN

PostPost by: rdssdi » Mon Aug 13, 2001 10:34 pm

Has anyone mounted an after market electric fan on their Elan or Elan +2. My
car came with the original Kenlowe temp. switch screwed into the radiator but
there was no fan or brackets. There was a small fan on the engine. I have
rebuilt my engine and removed that dinky fan.

I have contacted Kenlowe and they suggest a 12.3 inch heavy duty fan for the
Elan +2. Apparently, that fan when installed will block the hood from opening
more than a little as it will come in contact with it as it opens.

I wonder if 2 - 8" fans would be adequate? Maybe a thin profile fan mounted
as to pull air through the radiator? A thin profile as a "pusher" would allow
the hood to clear it.

I like 2 8" fans best, for hood reasons and also to use on fan with an automatic switch
and the second on a toggle. You'll only use the one usually and the second rare
occasions.Less current draw .Jeff.

Hi Bob,

I am currently fitting twin 10" Kenlowe blower fans to the wide type radiator (10" x 21.5" core size ) in my Plus 2 for a trip to Italy next month.

The fans fit perfectly, with the flat sections of the cowling mounted vertically, and a small amount of the outer cowling flange carefully trimmed to clear the rad top and bottom tanks. A single 10" Kenlow fits the smaller rad (10" x 15"core) perfectly and would be a major improvement on the original type fan.

Kenlow just do not seem to be familiar with the Elan dimensions if they recommend a 13" fan.

My 1969 Elan came with the Kenlowe switch but no electric fan, and in one
of the boxes there was a plastic fan. The underbonnet wiring was all
screwed up so I couldn't tell if it was wired for an electric fan. There
was a cut out in the front of my bonnet that I later found was to clear the
radiator mounted fan motor.

It seemed to me that there wasn't enough room between the engine and the
radiator for the plastic fan, so I got an original fan and fan bracket. It
would have been cheaper to buy an aftermarket fan, but then I'd have had to
figure out what was right.

Now I suspect that this was the typical Lotus change-over practice where
they were changing from the engine mounted fan to the electric and got the
radiators before the fans. I had thought it was just another part that got
lost in 20 years of the car sitting in different garages.

Bob, my + 2 (501111) came with the bracket and the electric fan shown in the
+2 Parts Book mounted in front of the radiator. In addition it has the 2
piece (2, 2 blade units) metal fan mounted on the water pump pulley. My
radiator has the smaller core and looks like it needs all the airflow it can
get.

I believe Hayden makes a variety of slim/pancake motor fans in numerous
sizes. There are a few other suppliers that also make the same type of fans
but off hand I don't recall their names.

I fitted a "Setrab"-pusher-fan in front of the radiator instead of the veryprimitive and uneffective original one.
It is very slim, available in many sizes, very silent.
