Clutch slave cylinder

Oh great wealth of knowledge....
Does anyone know the size c-clip that retains the clutch slave cylinder in the trans. housing.
Apparently I lost mine yesterday during a spirited roll in the countryside. Made for a very interesting ride home. Pushing through stop lights so I could pop it into gear.
Oh, the joys of owning a "classic" car.
The ride before the incident was spectacular though.
I could measure it but that means dismantling a lot. Thought I'd check here before getting into tearing things apart.
Thanks,
Briggs

Briggs,
The item you need is an external circlip with an inside diameter of 1".
Tools required are - small fingers, external circlip pliers, flat bladed
screwdriver ( to lever cylinder back into place ) and of course a jack.
Should take about three minutes start to finish. Good luck.
Regards
Ken W.
P.S. It would pay to check the retention lip on the slave cylinder has not
been damaged.

Just replaced mine this week. I found that a 1" dia. (inside measure) fit
just fine. The hardest part was getting it on with the exhaust in
place...very difficult to get at. Good luck.

AMEN to that. Sort of humbles you. You know how simple the job is and it
turns out to be a royal pain in the neck. Took me an hour to get the
circlip on and bleed the system.
Several times I wanted to call the engineer that designed it and ask him
what he was smoking the day they decided to put the slave cylinder
under/above the exhaust. (Maybe its just that I have headers?)
Amazing how a $0.39 part can ruin a day of driving.
Nice day out, gotta give it a quick cleaning and then a quick (not short)
drive.
Happy Saturday to all...

Two more points which may help:
1. You actually need 2 circlips / snap rings to hold the S/C firmly in
place, one in each groove at either end of the S/C;
2. If you have to use snap rings rather than circlips (like I had to - 1"
is a big circlip and not readily available in these parts on a Sunday), then
I found that a piston ring fitting tool was the only thing that would get
the bl**dy clips on.
Hope this helps

Yellow 1970 Plus 2S - drove her 750 miles (12.5 hours!) from Chester to
Newquay (Cornwall) and back this weekend for a surfing stag weekend. 75-80
mph all the way, and she didn't miss a beat. Absolutely incredible! Lots
of folks on M6, M5 and A30 waving at us - was it you?

Installing/removing them is a snap (pun intended) using a pair of snap ring
pliers. Last time I looked, they were around $15 at Sears - don't know about
other parts of the world. They should be readily available, since you need them
to rebuild transmissions among other things.
