Lockheed Brake booster/Servo

PostPost by: paul_adamson » Sun Jan 21, 2001 10:05 pm

The servo on the Elan is causing a little concern.
It's not working and it's not holding vacuum.
The car was running on three cylinders. Number one wasn't firing.
I blanked off the vacuum hose and voila - four cylinders firing.

I looked in the Paul Matty Parts list for a new servo. (This one looks new
but has been standing for years)
I do have a rather tatty looking original Girling Powerstop but I suspect
it's buggered. (Broken)
A new servo is ?155. A repair kit is ?95!!
I've never stripped a servo down so don't know what to expect.
So, what would be the group's answer to this conundrum?

Paul, I had the same problem a few years ago('75), and ended up with a
rock hard pedal and no brakes. Since a servo was an option on
the S2 anyway, and the cost not a lot different to what you have
quoted, I chucked the thing away. I did change the front pads, and
ended up with a nice firm pedal, and great stopping power. The only
slight disadvantage was at slow speed around town, with a bit of a
'dead' feel, but when warm, and from speed, much better feel than with
a servo.

I saw a brake servo advertised on eBay over the weekend. you might check
and see if it is still there.

Hi Paul
My 2p's worth.

Rebuild, forget it. Never found any one happy with a rebuild recently. Mine
was a head of rust and aluminium oxide inside.

New one? get rich and buy. Lockheed appears to be the only option now.

By pass it and take right leg aerobic lessons. Cheap option.

Regards to Leyland I used to work in Euxton @ ROF Chorley in my youth. Does
it still exist?

They must have used a different master cylinder with the servers. Changing to
the non-server master cylinder would cure the problem, and probably cheaper than
buying new servers.

ROF at Chorley? Not on my maps! (Joke)
I don't believe the factory is still in operation.
Some of it is still standing but a whole lot of it has been bulldozed and
now has houses on it.
I wouldn't fancy living there and doing any gardening.
I'd hate to think what exciting things you may find in the sub soil.

PS. My expert broth-in-law is currently assessing the options for the servo.
I'll keep you posted.
Nice to hear from someone that knows my area.

I, too, have a '72 Sprint, which never came with boosters. Fantastic pedal
feel. It's the dual master cylinder, but I'm unsure of the bore size.

There are/were three different diameter master cylinders; .625", .700" and
.750 inch. The smaller the diameter, the greater the mechanical advantage,
for a given caliper piston area. My non-servo S3 (a LHD bought in England)
had a .700 dia master. Depending on the pad compostiton, the pedal
pressure ranged from "normal" to very high. Replacing the master with the
.625" version made a big improvement. I'm not sure, but I believe that the
.700" was the diameter used with servos? Does anyone have specific
information about that??.

There is a chap in Parow, Cape Town, who does a very good rebuild, very reasonable but the Girling is just about unobtainable

My S3 was fitted with a booster out of a BMW ,3 Series I think, and according to the repairer it is very similar in spec i.e. boost to the Girling. The only problem is the connections are metric. Just make sure it is the smaller of the BMW boosters available

I did a servo repair on my original Girling a couple of years back
It was a fairly straightforward job which was very effective.
Only difficulty was getting the retaining strap on to keep the two halves of the
servo together (you need to saw it in half to insert the new diaphragm)
- An extra pair of hands is an invaluable help here!

Paul,

There is another option to the Lockheed booster that I have fitted to
several cars here with great success - the booster is made by PBR and the
part number is VH44. This booster will mount almost directly onto the
mounting plates for a plus 2 and the original pipework will fit straight in.
It develops only slightly more braking pressure than the original Lockheed
one, has a single piston setup and is very easy to overhaul, should it ever
need it.
