Help!

I have been inspecting my "new" acquisition and it appears the front end had
been hit and repaired. Poorly I might add.

It looks as if a full front replacement is in order.

Also, I noticed the bonnet catches that are mounted on the firewall are
"shimmed" with a piece of tapered plywood. Is this normal or indicative of
serious accident damage improperly repaired.

The car was certainly misrepresented and I will never again buy anything from
the internet. Pictures hide a thousand defects.

to match) under the bulkhead mounted bonnet catches.

Just checked my S/130/5 which I have had for 23 years.

The catches are mounted on wedged shape ply blocks which are 9/16 inches at the top and 3/16 at the bottom.

I'm sure everyone who has owned an Elan has made a mistake at some time and had that sinking seeling. If it's any consolation you can rebuild it and make a really good job of it - something to be proud of

response indicated no wedge shaped blocks and several said yes they are
correct.

I wonder if this was a "quick" modification during Elan production? You can
really get lost in the details. I enjoy the details.

front. I assume this is still available from Lotus. Lotus parts dealer
catalogs indicate it is but must be quoted and is usually not a stocked item.
Anyone have experience in purchasing a major body replacement part
manufactured by Lotus?

There is a plus +2 body for sale on ebay. It is located in Laguna Niguel,
Ca. We have a couple of listers that are in the general area that might be
able to take a quick look at it??

Does it really need a new nose. Unless there's bondo an inch thick and really butchered, you may be able to repair it. You should have seen the damageon the nose of my +2S. My Elan coupe landed on top of it, but I repaired it using the Cleco method i explained a week or two ago on this list. I willbe removing the body frome the frame to get underneath the nose better, but It is already straight again. When I am finished, I would challenge you to tell it was ever damaged. I think with a new new nose grafted on, there will be places harder to align than with the old, since not all of it came out of the same mold. Buy some Clecos! Be creative! My Lotus 22 tail sectionwas in 6 pieces when I brought it home from Tony's shop in Texas. I'll send you a photo of both the inside and out if you'd like to see and it's not for sale. The inside will show evidence of the repairs.
