Clear coat on magnesium wheels

PostPost by: abstamaria » Fri Sep 03, 1999 7:45 am

I am replacing wheels on my Lotus Elan and have acquired new magnesium 26R-style wheels. These are unpainted and have a polished rim. I was planning to spray the new wheels (after removing the WD40 currently on them) with perhaps two or three coats of clear polyurethane. Is this a good idea?

Many thanks,

Andres

Hi, Andres.
This might be recycling old information that you've already seen, but in
case you haven't (the source: good 'ole Tony Clark):

Erik,

Thank you for resending Tony Clark's note, which I must have missed.

George,

Many thanks for the advice. Am waiting for the rains to clear here and will
proceed to paint the wheels.

Andres,
Let us know what methodology you have in mind. Clear coat? What
type of paint? Do you think you will try to treat the inside of
the rims?

Erik,

I was going to use Anzahl polyurethane (a two-pack). I can't get Xynolyte
clear here, which Tony (from Texas) recommends and which I would have
preferred because of Tony's experience. The tires are off the wheels, so I
will paint everything, including the inside of the rims.

It is the wet season now, so I have to wait for a really hot, dry spell to
do this. I will try to dry out the rims after taking the WD40 off it with
paint-shop drying lamps (no oven), and then paint.
