speedometer cable woes

For the life of me, I can't figure out how my speedometer cable
reached the drive on the gearbox (LHD Elan S2). It seems to come up a
few inches short, no matter how I route it. Is it possible that I
lost a vital extension sometime during a loooooong restoration
process? Does anyone have any ideas or helpful suggestions?

Art,

The speedo cable goes to a right angle drive which is attached to an adapter
which is attached to the gearbox. My car came with those parts missing. The
PO had attached the cable directly to the gearbox using tiny Allen screws set
in holes that were drilled through the collar on the end of the cable.
Perhaps your car is missing the same parts. Best of luck.

The right angle drive is there as it should be, but the cable simply
isn't long enough any more! I've installed a replacement factory type
chassis, but I can't believe that it's enough different that the
relationship between body and gearbox has changed so much that the
cable no longer reaches. Everything else, including the gearshift
lever, is in the proper location. Is there an option for al longer cable?

Unfortunately, the last time I saw the original chassis was about 15
years ago (some projects go very slooooooooowly X;{ ). But I'm not
going to worry about it. The same cable in a longer length was used
in various Spitfire models, among others.
