Gear reduction starter polarity

PostPost by: frearther » Fri Jul 07, 2006 8:47 pm

Does my new gear reduction starter care whether it's negative or
positive ground? I haven't converted to positive ground yet; OTOH, I
don't want to install the old Lucas starter just to have the car on
the road by next weekend.

Other than the tach, is there anything else to change (battery leads,
obviously) when changing polarity?

Art,

There's really no point in converting to positive ground...ever.

Are you keeping the generator? If so, you'll need to repolarize it.
A quick search with Google turned up this page which describes how to
convert a Lotus Cortina to negative ground. Most of the advice
probably applies to an Elan.

It does not care. starter direction is determined by the way it is wound, not polarity
